Skyfire | 2019 | NR | – 1.5.2

content-ratingsWhy is “Skyfire” rated NR? The MPAA has not rated this film. The Kids-In-Mind.com evaluation includes a kissing scene, a couple of hugs, some flirting and partial nudity through a sheer dress, many scenes of a volcano in its stages of eruption with molten boulders being thrown into the air, venting with large blasts of steam and rock shooting out of a mountain side, lava flowing and giant clouds of ash rolling at high speed as people run and scream and many die (with little blood visible), and some moderate language. Read our parents’ guide below for details on sexual content, violence & strong language.

A young scientist (Hannah Quinlivan), whose scientist mother died during a volcano eruption, and is estranged from her scientist father (Xueqi Wang), returns to the tropical island where the lethal volcano is located to implement an innovative volcanic warning system. The island is also the home of the world’s only volcano theme park and resort, and shortly thereafter, the volcano rumbles to life and erupts. Also with Shawn Dou, Jason Isaacs, An Bai, Lingchen Ji and Liang Shi. Directed by Simon West. In Mandarin with English subtitles. [Running Time: 1:37]

Skyfire SEX/NUDITY 1

 – A man and a woman hug and kiss. A man and a woman swim, hold and touch each other tenderly underwater.
A woman wears a top that reveals cleavage and part of her bare abdomen throughout the movie. A young woman’s dress becomes sheer when wet and we see her nipples through the fabric. A man’s partial bare chest is shown when his shirt opens.

Skyfire VIOLENCE/GORE 5

 – A flake of ash flutters through the air and lands on a leaf that it burns through as a young girl and a woman realize a volcano is erupting; they run, chased by a giant cloud of ash, the young girl is placed on a truck speeding on the road, the woman runs after them but cannot reach them, and a man in a vehicle speeds toward the woman until it is struck by a molten boulder and flips on its side (we see the driver with a bloody wound on his head as we see the woman engulfed in the ash cloud.
Lava bubbles up from water while a man and a woman are swimming, they surface and see sheets of lava streaming down the walls of a cave and they swim away; the woman loses consciousness and the man gets her to the surface where she revives but is then pulled back into the water against a pipe that holds her until the man breaks the suction. Several people in a car speed in front of a fast flowing stream of lava; the car is thrown off the road and runs down a hill, then speeds in reverse to avoid the lava flow, a gas tank on the side of the vehicle catches fire and a woman climbs out and kicks it loose; it hits the ground and explodes, the car jumps a ravine and the lava flows over the edge as the car speeds away. A car is trapped in lava and the tires melt; a man climbs out and throws a hook attached to a cable that holds the car as it is pushed over a ledge and the people in the car climb up the cable and onto the ground above; the hook dislodges just as the last person reaches the top. People run across a bridge in flames and one man is thrown when a molten boulder crashes into the bridge and destroys it, trapping him on the other side.
Tremors rumble and molten boulders shoot through the air near a resort where people run screaming to leave the island; the people make their way to boats and some get away unharmed while others are struck by the boulders, thrown into the air and struck again, and two men are electrocuted in a pool when a light fixture falls into it. A man is shot off the top of a peak when a volcano vents and shoots out a blast of steam and rock; a helicopter flying nearby is also struck and spins out of control nearly hitting a man and a woman climbing down a cable, and before crashing to the ground in flames. A platform is struck by molten boulders and venting and people inside fall through holes and are shot out of the structure to their deaths; we see one man struck and in flames and is then shot out of the top of the structure, to his death. People walk across an elevated walkway that is struck by molten boulders, it collapses and a man walking on it falls to his death. A train car with three people in it falls off a broken line and sails along the side of a mountain throwing the people around inside the car until it comes to a stop when it runs into a car on a road (we see some bloody cuts on people’s faces).
Several people jump between elevated train cars as one approaches a break in the line; one man jumps and crashes into an upright pole and falls to his death. A man speeds on a motorcycle, falls off when the motorcycle slides on its side, and fires a flare in the air as a giant cloud of ash rolls toward him and overtakes him. A woman wearing protective gear lowers by a cable into an opening in a volcano where we see lava flowing; she places sensors around the area and rides the cable back up, but the cable is accidentally released and she falls toward the lava until a man grabs the cable and stops her abruptly (his gloves smolder from the friction) and she is lifted to the surface safely. Villagers run screaming as we hear that a lava flow is heading straight for them; we see the village in flames later and a man is seen with a bloody abdominal wound (he dies). A young girl cries for her mother and says that she is scared until a man retrieves her and takes her to a rescue boat (we see the child’s mother dead in the distance, with some blood on her face). A drone is flown through a window and crashes down to a switch that when flipped, diverts water flow to a village to save it from a lava flow. A car overheats and a man and a woman go on foot to a village to save a man; as lava bears down on the village they find themselves trapped with lava all around but are rescued and get away. A monitoring station is struck by molten boulders and a man inside puts flames out with an extinguisher and with his boot. A man jumps into a hole and hits the ground hard; lava flows near him and a cloud of ash blows across the opening of the hole where he had been standing.
Molten boulders are shot into the air and crash through buildings and threaten people in many scenes throughout the movie causing people to run screaming or speed away in cars and boats. We see static charges flashing in the air. Opening credits are accompanied by lava flows, volcano eruptions and other threatening natural occurrences.
A woman argues with a man about the safety of a resort, as a nearby volcano seems to be rumbling. A man and his adult daughter argue in several scenes about her being in a dangerous environment and his having been estranged since the death of his wife.

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
