"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME

The Fifth Element | 1997 | PG-13 | - 4.6.3

Bruce Willis stars in the sci-fi adventure set in the 23rd century.

SEX/NUDITY 4 - Three brief shots of a woman's bare breasts from the side or in the background. Sexual innuendo (including a scene of implied oral sex, but no nudity). A woman spends many scenes in a costume with white strips across her breasts and crotch so the bottom of her bosom and most of her buttocks can be seen. Kissing.

VIOLENCE/GORE 6 - A creature is shot in the head with some blood and a gaping wound; a creature is shot in the abdomen with blue "blood" on its abdomen and teeth. A man digs in the wound (with squishy noises) and pulls out an object. Lots of gunfire, usually automatic/machine guns with some people being killed -- but no blood. An extended scene with lots of martial arts fighting (punches, kicks, twirls). Thick ribbons of blood crawl down the forehead and nose of two men. Monstrous looking beings are in many scenes; one has blood on its shoulder and face. A man almost chokes to death. A woman punches through glass and punches a man in the stomach. A few riots. A few people have bruises, scratches and a bit of blood on their faces for a few scenes. Lots of explosions. Lots of falls. Threatening with guns. Chases. Reckless driving.

LANGUAGE 3 - One F-word derivative, some scatological terms, a couple of anatomical references and a few mild obscenities.

DISCUSSION TOPICS - The future, terrorism, spirituality, good vs. evil.

MESSAGE - The human race will survive because of love.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
