content-ratingsWhy is “Tron: Ares” rated PG-13? The MPAA rating has been assigned for “violence/action.” The Kids-In-Mind.com evaluation includes some form-fitting outfits, a woman stabbed and killed, many scenes of glowing vehicles creating glowing streams of light that cause collisions and damage, many scenes of AI-generated soldiers fighting with glowing weapons, AI-generated characters crumbling to bits and yelling as if in pain, a couple of limbs being lopped off and leaving glowing stumps with what looks like digitized blood, a man being slapped in the face, discussions of greed vs. doing things for the good of humankind, several arguments, and some strong language. Read our parents’ guide below for details on sexual content, violence & strong language.

When the greedy head of a tech company (Evan Peters) is determined to find a valuable line of code that will make his AI-generated soldiers be able to survive in the real world indefinitely, his plans turn deadly. A security program (Jared Leto) is then sent to recover the data and eliminate the competition. Also with Greta Lee, Jeff Bridges, Jodie Turner-Smith, Gillian Anderson, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro and Cameron Monaghan. Directed by Joachim Rønning. [Running Time: 1:59]

Tron: Ares SEX/NUDITY 1

 – A woman holds on tightly to a man while they speed on a motorcycle.
AI-generated characters wear skin-tight suits that outline their bodies including breasts, buttocks and legs.

Tron: Ares VIOLENCE/GORE 5

 – A woman is stabbed in the abdomen and she falls to the floor, with stains on her clothing and dies.
A giant hovering vehicle spawns and sails through the air in a city searching for a woman; it shoots rockets at helicopters and planes causing them to crash to the ground and into buildings, it wraps a plane in lasers and cuts off its wings; the giant vehicle crashes into a building and a tank is spawned from it carrying a soldier that tracks down the woman (we see the woman trapped in a glowing force field and she is injured with blood on her head). A man stands in a road and throws a weapon at a tank as it approaches causing it to tumble on the ground and dissolve to bits. Three AI-generated soldiers fight with a man and two are destroyed and crumble to bits; the third continues fighting with the man and her hand is cut off (we see sparks at the wrist, like digitized blood) and she trembles and turns to ash.
In a digital framework, a weapon is dropped on the floor and characters fall through the glowing framework; a woman falls into water and a man grabs her arm as she sinks and they surface and speed on a vehicle across the water toward a glowing portal while being chased by others on vehicles and drones; the first two speed into the portal and appear in the real world. Several AI-generated characters breach a computer security system and move through a glowing framework; they are confronted by a security team and fight using weapons, throws and kicks and when struck they crumble to bits; one attacker loses part of his leg (we see glowing sparks below his knee) and others sprout mechanical wings and fly away while the injured character is helped by another character and they are destroyed (they crumble to bits while they yell). An AI-generated soldier crashes into an office building and throws items around (we see rubble and sparks flash); she throws a man across the room leaving him moaning and threatens a woman until the soldier is sprayed with water from a sprinkler system and she dissolves and yells.
A woman drives a van and speeds through gates and onto a road causing traffic to swerve. During a chase, a character speeding on a motorcycle stops just before crashing into a vehicle with a toddler in the backseat; a car in traffic ramps over another car and crashes (we do not see anyone injured); two motorcycles crash through gates and a woman is thrown into a dumpster filled with recycled paper (she is unharmed); the motorcycles create glowing streams of light that seem to be made of matter and when vehicles crash into them they are damaged or thrown. A man authorizes information to be extracted from a woman and that the woman should then be killed (extract and delete). A man orders AI-generated soldiers to bring a woman to him; she speeds on a motorcycle on roads and the soldiers chase on glowing motorcycles that cut through vehicles as they pass, a bus swerves across a road to avoid hitting one vehicle, the woman speeds into a parking garage chased by one soldier, she uses her motorcycle to knock the soldier over a railing and we see her on the ground below motionless (she revives). Police arrive at a warehouse and a man inside locks them out before digitizing himself and disappearing. An AI-generated soldier lunges toward another AI generated character and crashes through a plate glass window before falling to the ground below and disintegrating. A woman speeds down a snow-covered mountain on a vehicle to a remote outpost. A car crashes into a garbage can and knocks over a bike rack on a sidewalk. Two AI generated characters dissolve to bits and scream as a woman is held off the ground in a laser beam and we hear that she is being digitized.
People in a warehouse and wearing protective glasses watch as many lasers create piles of mesh in front of them; when the lasers stop the mesh falls away to reveal a large armored vehicle (rapid response tank) and a soldier inside as a man says that his technology can prepare for a full-scale war in 5 minutes. An AI-generated soldier is described as being expendable. Two men argue over the phone and one says, “I hate that man when they hang up.” A woman slaps her adult son in the face and he is alarmed. A woman says, “I think I broke a rib.”
Several attackers fight with a soldier in a digital framework and when they are struck they crumble to small blocks and disappear. A giant face presses through a wall in a digital framework and speaks to a soldier giving him security directives in a deep booming voice. A chip containing important data is thrown into a body of water.
A woman is seen in a hospital bed with IVs and monitors and we understand that she later died from cancer; we see people grieving at a funeral.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
