With A Friend Like Harry | 2001 | R | - 4.6.6

A family with three young daughters is vacationing, trying to relieve the stress of trying unsuccessfully to rebuild an old house for the last three years. Suddenly Harry, one of dad's old classmates, shows up and tries to solve all of their problems with unpredictable -- and often extreme -- results. With Laurent Lucas, Sergi Lopez, Laurie Caminata, Sophie Guillemin and Mathilde Seigner. In French with English subtitles. [1:57]

SEX/NUDITY 4 - A man passionately kisses another man's reluctant fiancée. A woman caresses a man's neck and he kisses her hand. There is an allusion to a man touching his daughter-in-law inappropriately. A woman is shown nude lying on her stomach exposing her back, buttocks and legs, and a man is shown nude briefly from the back exposing his back, buttocks and legs. There are several scenes suggesting that a couple has had sex (we learn that the man has a non-sexual post-coitus ritual and we see him doing it). A few men are shown shirtless in different scenes. A woman is seen shaving her legs with a towel loosely wrapped around her chest and hips. A buxom woman is seen in varying amounts of clothing; they are usually very tight, revealing cleavage, midriff and legs. A woman is shown in a nightie. There is a scene in a men's room where two men are using urinals (nothing is visible). Three young girls are shown bathing, exposing their nude bottoms and backs.

VIOLENCE/GORE 6 - A man is stabbed in the abdomen and falls over dead; we see his blood-streaked shirt. A dead man with a very bloody head wound is seen in the trunk of a car. A woman is rolled over to expose a bloody head wound and a blood-stained pillow (a plastic bag is put over her head). A dead body is dragged down some stairs, outside and dumped in a well, another dead body is dragged and dumped in a well, and another dead body is shown being dragged into some woods. We see two dead bodies lying on slabs in a crematorium; both are covered to the shoulders by sheets. A car is pushed off a road and down a ravine by another car; it rolls a couple of times before stopping (we find out later that the occupants were killed). A man talks about killing another man's wife and three children. A dream sequence shows a monkey flying with a helicopter hat toward a man, it screeches and aims the blades at him. A man drives a car too fast on winding roads a few times; one time he screams repeatedly and closes his eyes (we hear later that he crashed the car). A father yells at his daughter when she won't stop kicking the back of his chair. A married couple bicker intensely. Two coffins are shown during a funeral.

LANGUAGE 6 - 8 F-words (in French these terms are actually scatological, but they are translated in the English subtitles as F-words), 4 scatological terms, 1 anatomical term, 6 sexual references, 2 mild profanities, some name calling and insults, and 4 religious exclamations.

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Meddling parents, strained relations between a husband and wife, death of parents, suicide, cremation.

MESSAGE - Solve any problem even if it requires an extreme solution. Excess is the only way to fulfillment.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
