Triple Frontier | 2019 | R | – 1.6.10

content-ratingsWhy is “Triple Frontier” rated R? The MPAA rating has been assigned for “violence and language throughout.” The Kids-In-Mind.com evaluation includes a few cleavage revealing outfits, planning and implementation of an armed robbery and murder including several people being shot and killed with bloody wounds shown, a few perilous journeys in a helicopter through steep mountain ranges and a very narrow path with donkeys, and nearly 80 F-words. Read our parents’ guide below for details on sexual content, violence & strong language.”

A group of former soldiers (Ben Affleck , Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund and Pedro Pascal) with a lot of combat experience decide to take out a notorious South American drug kingpin and also take his money. Greed and various complications pose challenges as they try to fly over the Andes mountains and the men have to also struggle with honor, loyalty and their own propensity toward violence. Also with Adria Arjona, Louis Rodriguez and Juan Camilo Castillo. Directed by J.C. Chandor. Several lines of dialogue are spoken in Spanish and Portuguese with English subtitles. [Running Time: 2:05]

Triple Frontier SEX/NUDITY 1

 – A man asks another man if he is sleeping with his informant and says that his informants are usually, “hot.” A man makes a comment about “full intercourse.” A man kisses another man on the cheek. A man talks to a woman and holds her face in his hands.
Shirtless fighters are seen and we see their bare shoulders, chests, abdomen and backs. A woman wears a skimpy outfit that reveals cleavage, bare abdomen and legs to the hips as she carries a card around a cage for an MMA fight.

Triple Frontier VIOLENCE/GORE 6

 – Two men with weapons try to negotiate over the cargo that the men dropped in a jungle, with others that found the money on their land: several men are shot (with blood) and one wounded man is shown on the ground (we see bullet holes on his T-shirt) and says, “Send me to God” and one of the gunmen shoots him again off screen. Several armed men enter a house where guards are on duty and choke and strike a few of them (we see them being bound afterward), a man walks through a hallway and is shot in the leg (we see blood on the wound and the man yells as he is gagged with duct tape and dragged off-screen). A man pushes his way out from behind a bookcase and shoots into a room where other men are standing; one man is struck in the side (we see blood) and the man behind the bookcase is shown (we see blood on his shirt and his head when a gunman shoots him again in the head). A man is shot and we see his dead body on the ground with bloody wounds visible. Four men are shot in different rooms of a house and we see blood spray and splatter on floors and walls. Several armed men are shot in and out of a van and we see blood and their bodies flinch on impact. Men are shot at as they walk through rocky terrain; we see two of the gunmen shot from a distance and blood spurts. A man is shot in the head and we see blood spurt and pool under his head.
A police helicopter flies over several police vehicles moving on a road and surrounding a building in a town: armed police officers take positions as an RPG is fired from the building and blows up one of the vehicles, several officers are shot and blood sprays (one in the head and blood spurts and one in the leg and he yells with blood on his pant leg) until one officer launches an RPG into the building blowing up the top floor (we see flames and charred bodies with some bloody wounds among the rubble later).
A man sees several people on their knees and with bags over their heads and we see a man with a gun shoot one of the men before we hear several additional shots (presumably all the people were executed). Several people are handcuffed in a room and questioned by police; one officer holds a gun to a man’s throat and another man’s head, we hear heavy punches landing when a man leaves the room and then three shots (implying that three people in the room were shot dead). A boy holds a gun on three men in a jungle (he does not shoot); the men take the gun and tie the boy up leaving him unharmed.
Men in a truck are rammed by teens in another truck: they chase through jungle roads and the men shoot at the pursuing trucks, pushing one off the side of the road and another truck crashes into a tree. Several men are in a transport helicopter overloaded with cargo flying toward a tall mountain range and unable to climb over a peak; black smoke billows from the vehicle and it crash-lands even after cargo is dumped (one passenger jumps just before impact and we see him OK Later) and we see several men with bloody wounds on their faces and heads after the crash. Several men drive a truck into the ocean and unload a body and cargo, placing it in a small boat that takes them to a larger boat in the distance as they are shot at by people on shore. Several men wrap a dead body in a tarp and carry it for the remainder of the trek through a mountain range. Several men haul many heavy bags up and down a mountain range. Men lead donkeys loaded with cargo along a narrow mountain pass and one donkey breaks through the earth and falls far to the ground below.
A man in an MMA cage fight is struck hard in the face as the scene ends (we do not know the outcome of the fight). A woman breaks away from restraints and runs away from police; one man chases her through narrow passages and up steep flights of stairs, but she gets away.
Several men in a jungle arm themselves and move around the perimeter of a compound; one man nearly steps on a ground sensor. A man describes himself with his arm around another man’s neck in a grocery store while his wife was jumping on his back to make him stop. Men argue in a few scenes. A man tells a woman, “They will find you and they will kill you.” A man says he was “suckered” into doing something. A man says that he feared another man went “full native.” A woman says that she has to get her brother out of jail. We hear that a man and his wife are separated. A man says, “We’re a dying breed” (as warriors). Men talk about how many people they have killed.
A man douses a house with lighter fluid and lights a match (we see the house in flames). Several men break walls with their fists and knives and pull out large amounts of currency and load it into bags and a van. A man burns stacks of money for warmth. Several men plan a robbery in several scenes.
A man spits on a police officer’s shoe and we understand that he is then beaten and shot (off-screen). A man is shown with full body tattoos and he has blood on his head, face and chest after an MMA fight.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
