Why is “In Your Dreams” rated PG? The MPAA rating has been assigned for “thematic content, scary images, action/peril and some rude humor.” The Kids-In-Mind.com evaluation includes a husband and wife kissing and embracing, a girl smitten with a boy, non-sexual partial nudity, a pixelated crotch, a girl in a hospital when she won’t wake up, many nightmares scenes of children in peril being thrown around in storm clouds and threatened by large wizards and other beings, several arguments between siblings and discussions of a family breaking up, discussions of the fear of change, and name-calling. Read our parents’ guide below for details on sexual content, violence & strong language.
When a young girl senses a strain in her parents’ relationship and worries that they will separate, she decides that she must reach a dream wizard and have him help her make things right again. Also with the voices of Simu Liu, Cristin Milioti, Jolie Hoang-Rappaport, Elias Janssen, Omid Djalili, Gia Carides and Craig Robinson. Directed by Erik Benson & Alexander Woo. [Running Time: 1:30]
In Your Dreams SEX/NUDITY 2

► A girl talks to a boy awkwardly in a store dropping things and bumping into a lamp tipping it over. A husband wraps his arm around his wife’s shoulders. A girl has a crush on a boy. A sand creature dances thrusting its hips suggestively and is reprimanded.
► A remark is made about a “naked dream,” and we see a boy wearing no clothing with a pixelated patch covering his crotch, a stuffed animal with a pixelated patch where genitals would be and a girl hiding in a clothing display. We see a boy’s bare buttock cleavage when his pants slip down. A boy wears a parrot costume at a restaurant and the costume includes a coconut bra top and a hula skirt.
In Your Dreams VIOLENCE/GORE 3
– A boy and a girl argue and she tells him that he messes everything up and he falls and disappears (in a nightmare); the boy wakes up and the girl does not and won’t wake up even when her parents try to wake her (we see her in the hospital and hear that her vitals are fine, but she just needs to wake up); the girl sees a timeline where her brother doesn’t exist and becomes upset. Two children and a stuffed animal are shown wrapped with ropes and hanging from what looks like gallows, as someone calls out to “execute them.”
► A girl wakes up and sees her brother’s bed rearing like a horse, it charges and crashes through the bedroom wall and she is pulled along behind it by a blanket; they fly through the air, the girl is slammed into a garage door, she is dragged across a roof and when a button is pushed and a rocket fires, they are launched into the clouds and they are surrounded by twinkling lights. Lightning flashes around a bed floating in the clouds and carrying a boy and a girl, the bed breaks apart and they fall through a dark swirling storm cloud and they both wake up with a start. A giant stuffed animal falls on the floor and breaks a hole in it causing a house to break apart and a girl to be separated from her family and a giant wave washes over her in a dream. A boy and a girl are swirled around in a giant storm cloud and they try not to wake up; they walk on sand-covered ground and follow glowing birds overhead and a giant vessel floats out of the ground; they float off the ground and toward a glowing doorway and they see tiny beings carrying sand blocks all around the area and lead the boy and girl up a flight of stairs. A girl is pelted by pacifiers falling from the sky in a dream. We hear a deep voice calling from behind a giant fridge in a dream and a boy and a girl walk through the dust covered area, the girl steps on something (we hear a squish) and walks past a wad of something that puts a lost retainer on its head and says, “I’m a perfect princess.” A large wizard appears in the clouds as a boy and a girl float on a bed and he calls for them to follow him. A boy finds a lost stuffed animal pinned under a giant appliance in a dream and pulls it out (it’s covered with dust and is stained from food). A girl’s teeth fall out of her mouth (in a dream). A stuffed animal’s neck snaps back and cracks a few times and it straightens itself out again. Food items run through the area in fear as they become covered with mold and decay and turn zombie-like in a dream.
► A boy and a girl ride on a bed floating in a ball pit river in a dream. A boy has a nightmare about giant badgers bashing them (resembling an arcade game) and he wakes up. A boy and a girl see an elderly woman’s head and face with discolored flesh and a milky eye and she talks to them (we hear that this is their grandmother). A girl has a nightmare that she arrives to class unaware that they are having a test and that she might get a bad grade. A nightmare shows people on a pirate ship as a giant fish rises up out of the water next to them.
► A giant hot dog eats a boy and we hear a flatulent sound as the boy is pushed out the other end of the hot dog and the hot dog exclaims that it can feel pain. A giant stuffed bear squeezes a boy and a girl against its paws and the boy pushes back freeing them and the girl punches the bear in the nose using a “dynamite fist” (Anime-style) punch and it explodes. A boy throws a framed picture against a wall and it breaks a hole in the wall and sand pours through. A boy swirls through a dark swirling cloud and a scary voice calls the boy’s name (we hear growling sounds). A boy and a girl fly through a structure as it changes shape and many small creatures pile on the bed they are flying on weighing it down to keep them from leaving; a man pushes a passage open and a woman punches a wizard in the face.
► A girl swerves on her bike when a boy speeds next to her. A girl and a boy struggle over a spatula and a pan tips off the stove and crashes to the floor. A girl throws a wadded-up piece of paper at a boy and hits him in the face. A boy looks at a book entitled “The Legend of the Sandman” and the lights in the room flicker and turn off and a jukebox turns on and starts playing a song startling the boy. A girl drops a picture on her bed in frustration and it falls to the floor and breaks the glass. A boy puts clear tape on his eyes to hold them open when he is afraid to fall asleep. A boy and a girl fight over a sleep machine when the boy does not want to fall asleep. A restaurant features animatronic characters singing songs and playing musical instruments. A boy jumps on a person wearing a parrot costume and pulls the head off revealing a boy that says, “I hate my life.” A moving truck drives away and the back door opens, dumping boxes on the road and breaking some items. A boy steals a book from a store.
► A girl falls asleep and finds herself in a bowl of cereal in a dream; she sees many types of breakfast foods walking around, runs through the town happily, and licks a sausage-shaped dog. A boy says that butterflies are made by the government to spy on us.

A girl tells her younger brother, “You ruin everything.” A girl refers to her younger brother as “the disaster.” A girl overhears her parents talking about money and her mother says, “Something’s gotta change”; she later hears her father tell her mother that he doesn’t know if he can make a move to follow a job for her. A boy reads a title on a graphic novel and says, “Call me when your fists actually explode.” A man talks to his young daughter about his frustration with not being successful as a musician. A character is named “Nightmara.” A boy says, “I almost had a nightmare in my pants.”
► A trail of bologna slices is shown on a floor leading to a boy’s bed and a girl steps on one (we hear a squish); the boy later steps on a slice and then eats it. A boy bumps a girl’s elbow causing her to spill a beverage she is holding. A dog urinates on a man’s shoe. A boy sleeps and drools on his sheets (we see drool). In a dream, a boy talks about his “laser farts” and we see brightly colored streaks spraying from his pants a few times and they lift him off the ground. CAVEATS
Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.
We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.
Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
