The saga continues with the Resistance fighting the First Order led by the force devoted to the Dark Side. With Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson and Anthony Daniels. Directed by J.J. Abrams. Alien languages are spoken in a few scenes with English subtitles. [2:15]

SEX/NUDITY 1 - A young woman kisses a young man on the forehead; the young man is unconscious on a medical table. A man and woman hug goodbye. A young man and a young woman hug in greeting. A man and a woman gaze at each other tenderly.

VIOLENCE/GORE 6 - Giant alien creatures with tentacles and mouths full of pointed teeth move through a large flying ship attacking people and eating them: we see a man thrown into the mouth of one and he is devoured (we see his empty boot fall to the floor; no blood is shown), and a young man is wrapped in a tentacle and carried away (we hear him screaming) until a passage door is closed and cuts off the tentacles (we see goo spurt and the severed tentacles flop around).
A powerful weapon is charged and discharged and we see several planets being struck and destroyed as their citizens watch in terror. A powerful weapon is charged by draining the energy from suns and we hear people talking about their system of planets being the next in the weapon's path. Explosives are detonated and a compound erupts.
Many flying vessels descend on a planet and attack an encampment: one man runs to a flying vessel, it is shot and he gets out and shoots at the attackers who are setting the area on fire (an attacker is shown with a smear of blood on his helmet as another dies); many people are led away at gunpoint and a dark shrouded person swings a flaming light saber at a man and strikes him down (we see the man fall), another man shoots at the dark shrouded person who uses his power to freeze the man's arm and he is taken prisoner as the dark shrouded person orders all the villagers to be killed and we hear screaming and laser fire. Two men argue while standing on a walkway over a deep crevasse; one man is run through by a saber and he falls off the walkway (we see sparks and the man's face before he falls).
A flying vessel is shot down and we see one occupant on the ground with a parachute behind him; he frees himself and searches the ship's wreckage for the pilot until the ground opens up and swallows it (we assume that the pilot is dead). A man is shown restrained in a chair and his face is bloody presumably after a beating. A man is shown with bloody cuts and bruises on his face. A young woman is shown restrained in a chair and a dark cloaked man questions her and uses a power to see what she knows and she struggles to resist him.
Flying vessels fly overhead and shoot up a village and many people run for cover; a young man and a young woman are blown through the air by a blast, get back up and run toward another flying vessel as it is blown up; they get into another vehicle and take off awkwardly hitting some structures on the ground as they go and they are chased and shot at by smaller vessels; they continue to exchange fire as they fly through tight spaces and wreckage on the ground until the smaller vessels are struck and crash. Many flying vessels swoop over water and fire on other vessels and armed men on the ground; many are struck and we see armed men thrown through the air when struck (no blood). Flying ships move toward a target and are fired upon in several scenes; they exchange fire and we see some strikes, and a few ships crash and explode.
Blaster fire is exchanged in a few scenes and we see people struck and thrown (no blood is shown). An armed man is shot through the back with a crossbow-like weapon. Two men with sabers fight briefly. An alien creature is shot in the arm and moans in pain; we see him being treated later and he continues to moan. A dark-cloaked man throws a young woman high into a tree and she falls unconscious; a young man fights with the dark-cloaked man using sabers and the young man is slashed down the back falling unconscious; the young woman fights the dark-cloaked man and they are both struck a few times with sabers (we see sparks and smoke and the man is shown with a large bloody gash on his face), the young woman is held at the edge of a drop-off as the ground begins to break away beneath them until she breaks free and the ground breaks away between them. Several armed men (referred to as the Death Team) board a flying ship and threaten a man; another group of armed men board and threaten him also. A dark cloaked person uses a power to extract information from a man; he struggles to resist but cannot. A young woman runs into a forest and is followed by a dark cloaked person; the young woman shoots several times until the cloaked person uses a power to hold her arm and weapon behind her; he threatens her by holding a flaming saber to her face and causes her to fall unconscious.
A flying ship almost crashes into a sheer rock wall, swoops through trees and crashes onto a snow-covered ground resting at the edge of a cliff. A huge flying ship opens a large hatch that "swallows" a smaller vessel and the occupants hide in a hatch and prepare to release a poison gas on the people capturing them (they do not do this eventually). A young woman chases a young man through a marketplace, she hits him with a long staff and he falls to the ground where a droid zaps him a couple of times as the woman questions him. A man holds a gun on a young man and a young woman hiding under a floor hatch. A young woman with weapon moves through an enemy ship unnoticed and scales a sheer wall to avoid being seen.
A man tries to take off in an enemy flying vessel and it is attached to a tether; the ship hovers in the air and is fired upon as he tries to free it and the vessel fires back at the people on the ground. A small flying vessel maneuvers around giant cannons that fire at it and destroys them before speeding away.
An alien creature with a large mouth full of pointed teeth and tentacles attaches itself to a flying vessel and we see its teeth and tongue through the window; when the vessel takes off the creature falls off and we see some slime remaining. An alien creature presses against the glass of a containment room in a large flying vessel and we see many pointed teeth and what could be a tongue. A hologram of a leader shows that he has a large gash in his skull, his flesh is taut and appears to have holes in it, his eyes are yellow and his hands are gnarled. A watering hole scenes shows a variety of alien beings in many shapes and sizes (a large being with tusks and slimy teeth, bird-type creatures with large beaks, and humanoid-looking beings). An alien crawls across a table to look deep into the eyes of a young man seated there. A man is shown with a metallic hand.
A young woman hears a child crying for help and goes to investigate; she finds a trunk that she opens and touches a device inside it that causes her to see scenes of violence and despair. A young woman hears noises in the distance and finds a small droid trapped in a scavenger's net; she reprimands the scavenger and cuts the droid loose. A young man trudges through a desert, comes upon a village and drinks water from a pool where a giant creature is drinking (looks like an oversized boar with tusks); the man recoils from the taste of the water but continues drinking. A young man hyperventilates, removes his helmet and we can see that he is sweating and in a panic as he is questioned by his commander.
A dark cloaked person draws a flaming saber and slashes up the wall of a room in anger (we see sparks fly and the scorched metal after); this happens in another scene as well. A young man handling explosives drops one; a man tells him to be careful. A scavenger removes parts from a crashed vessel, cleans them and sells them.
A young man talks about a massacre and the alien creatures that did it. Several references are made to destroying the members of the Resistance and individual people throughout the movie. There are discussions of many forms of evil and the Dark Side vs. the Light Side. A young man says, "They will slaughter us," and "We all need to run." A woman tells a man, "You still drive me crazy." A man tells a young man, "He'll crush you." A young man says, "I want to be free of this pain."

LANGUAGE 2 - 2 mild obscenities, name-calling (little freaks, mumbo jumbo, loathsome, beasts, scavenger scum, weak and foolish), exclamations (you gotta be kidding me).

SUBSTANCE USE - Alien beings are shown drinking in an establishment (it is not clear what the beverages are).

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Good vs. evil, love, friendship, disorder, treachery, treason, eternal movie franchises.

MESSAGE - Some things are worth fighting for. Family ties are strong.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
