A young woman (Claire Danes) working in Los Angeles becomes romantically involved with an older man (Steve Martin), believing he is in love with her, although he seems to have problems with intimacy. At the same time, the young woman meets a young man (Jason Schwartzman) who is quirky, unsettled, and still trying to find himself. Based on Steve Martin's eponymous novella. Also with Frances Conroy and Sam Bottoms. Directed by Anand Tucker. [1:44]

A woman sprays perfume on her neck and tells a man to smell, and he leans in (she is a department store cosmetic associate).
A young man and a young man (both clothed) sleep in bed holding each other. A man walks with a woman and has his hand in the back of her pants. A man and a young woman hug, and a young man and a young woman hug.

In separate scenes an older man and a young woman talk about how they each think their relationship is.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
