In A World... | 2013 | R | - 6.2.5

In the shadow of her successful voice-over actor father (Fred Melamed), a young woman (Lake Bell) tries her hand at voice-over acting and finally finds success, only to have her father try to steal the show. Also with Demetri Martin, Michaela Watkins, Rob Corddry, Nick Offerman, Tig Notaro and Geena Davis. Directed by Lake Bell. [1:33]

SEX/NUDITY 6 - A man tells a woman that he would like to kiss her and we see him kissing the woman's nose seductively; he kisses her nose again, then briefly kisses her lips and the man's head moves down (we only see the woman from waist-up) and it is implied that he is performing oral sex; we then see the man and the woman waking up with a sheet wrapped around the woman and the man's bare chest is visible (the sheet covers his waist) and previous sex is implied; the woman pulls a bra out from under the sleeping man's body.
We see a man and a woman in bed together (a portion of the man's bare chest is visible and we see a sheet wrapped around the woman); previous sex is implied and the woman makes a sexually suggestive remark about the two of them having sex; they then begin to kiss suggestively.
A woman jumps into a man's arms and they kiss passionately; they fall to the ground and continue kissing. A man and a woman kiss passionately; they pull away and begin kissing two more times. A woman kisses a man. A man and a woman kiss. A man and a woman confess their feelings for one another; the woman kisses the man and quickly walks away. A man hugs a woman's shoulder and then kisses the woman's head. A man and woman hug. A man and woman hug in greeting. A man and woman dance arm in arm.
A young woman jokes with a woman, saying that the woman is "hitting on her" and the woman asks the young woman for a drink (the young woman agrees). A man flirts with a woman and the woman is obviously flustered by his attention. A man makes a vaguely sexual comment to a woman about her "knickers" being in a bunch; we later hear the woman's husband listening to a recording of the woman and other man flirting. A man makes a vaguely sexual remark to a woman, saying that he would be able to say things that would make the woman blush.
On multiple occasions we see a shirtless man in a steam room (his bare chest is visible); on one occasion, a man holding a towel over his crotch walks past the shirtless man and we see a portion of the walking man's bare buttocks. Two shirtless men talk with one another as they sit in a steam room. We see a man wearing brief-style underwear and his bare chest is visible. A man is seen in a bathtub (a portion of his bare chest is visible) as a woman (fully clothed) washes his hair (she is a maid and it is not a sexual act).
At a party, we see an obviously intoxicated young woman trying to dance suggestively next to an older man until the man's younger wife steps in between them. A woman is seen sitting on a man's lap on two occasions.
A young woman asks a man if she can shower in his house and the man is obviously flustered, but we then see the young woman return in a full robe; we hear the sound of showering (we see no nudity and the man does not see nudity) and the man excitedly tells his sister-in-law that a young woman is "naked and showering" in the bathroom.
We hear a man leave a woman a suggestive voicemail message; the man's adult daughter overhears the voicemail and makes a disapproving face while making a remark that the woman likes her father for "the wrong reasons." A man tells another man that he was able to "rip the panties" off a woman (who is the other man's daughter, unbeknownst to both of them), while he was "sticking his tongue down her throat"; the other man (the woman's unknowing father) makes a crude remark that implies that he wants the man to string the woman along and have sex with her again as revenge. A man tells another man that he is going to a party so his wife will have "after party sex" with him, and encourages the man to do the same with a date. A man makes a vaguely sexual comment to his adult daughter about his younger girlfriend and him having sex. A woman, through a wall, shouts at a man that it is odd to be sleeping in his bed after confessing that she likes him. A woman tells her sister that she had kissed a man other than her husband on the mouth and asks if she (the sister) had sex with the man; the woman then adds graphically that they had attempted to have sex, but it was not successful. A young woman asks a man if they had sex the previous night (she wakes up after blacking out in the man's apartment) and the man says no. A man tries to imply to his adult daughter that he knows she is sexually involved with a man until the man's other adult daughter interrupts and remarks crudely that her sister is explicitly having sex with a man. A man makes a crude remark about a woman performing oral sex. A man makes a crude remark to a woman about "searching" her body. A man makes a snide remark to another man, acknowledging that the other man had previously had sex with his daughter. A man crudely remarks that someone "screwed themselves" out of a position, in reference to sex. A woman jokes to a man that he should "use protection" when having sex with her sister and the man jokes back that he is wearing a type of female contraceptive. A man makes a crude remark that he used to have no problems "getting the pants" off women. A man calls another man a crude nickname for male ejaculate, as a joke. A man makes a crude remark about another man's genital size in relation to his veracity. A woman excitedly asks another woman (her step-daughter) if she is pregnant and the woman's father makes a rude remark. A man makes a crude remark, saying that he is going to "rape" a man's liquor collection at a party.

VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - A man throws his cell phone at a wall.
A man shouts at his wife. Two women shout at their father and both make references to their mother dying of a drug overdose and possible suicide; the man makes a snide off-handed comment about the woman killing herself because of a drug addition causing one of the women to storm away. A man shouts at his adult daughter.
A man coughs and it appears that he is choking (he is fine a moment later). A man looks like he is going to have a heart attack; he storms away and shouts miserably when his much-younger wife tries to comfort him; he weeps but then appears to be fine moments later.
A woman jumps out to scare a man as a joke and he is startled. A woman accidentally bumps into another woman.
A woman dramatically tells her father, "I'm dead" when he tries to speak with her. A television reporter announces that a man had died. A man off-handedly tells a woman that his parents had died when he was younger.
We see a woman on the toilet (no nudity is visible and we do not hear the sound of urination). A woman makes a crude remark about going to the bathroom and making a bowel movement. On two occasions, a man crudely jokes with a woman about passing gas. A young woman apologizes to a man "about his sheets" implying she had vomited on them from too much drinking.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
