"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME

Beyond Silence | 1996 | R | - 4.2.1

Sylvie Testud is a talented young clarinet player yearning to break free from deaf parents who don't seem to appreciate her passion for music. Co-starring Tatjana Trieb, Howie Seago, Emmanuelle Laborit, Sybille Canonica, Matthias Habich, Alexandra Bloz and Hansa Czypionka. In German & Sign Language, with English subtitles.

SEX/NUDITY 4 - Several kisses. In one scene, we see the bare shoulders and backs of a man and woman while they kiss in bed (it is suggested that they then have intercourse); later, we see them lying naked on their sides (the sides of their bare legs and buttocks are visible and shadows cover their torsos). We see a presumably nude but sheet-covered man and woman in bed. We see a girl's bare shoulders while she's bathing; we also see a woman's bare legs when she's in a bathtub. We see a girl in a bra and a nude woman's bare back as she walks into a lake and begins to swim.

VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - A man slaps a girl in the face and pushes a girl out a door. A man throws wine on a woman's face during an argument. A boy is dragged from a room and locked in his bedroom. We see and hear a girl urinating on a toilet.

LANGUAGE 1 - One scatological reference and a few mild obscenities are seen in subtitles.

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Deafness, death, dysfunctional family relationships, falling in love, envy, bitterness, fulfilling one's dreams.

MESSAGE - The gap between the hearing and the deaf world can be bridged with love and understanding.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
