"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME

Legionnaire | 1998 | R | - 3.7.3

When Jean-Claude Van Damme fails to take a dive in a boxing match, he has to join the French Foreign Legion in order to escape the thugs he double-crossed. Co-starring Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Steven Berkoff, Nicholas Farrell and Ana Sotrenovic.

SEX/NUDITY 3 - Some sexual innuendo. One kiss. One scene takes place in a brothel; it's implied that two men have sexual relations with prostitutes there. We see many men's bare posteriors as they're showering. Women in a burlesque show lift the front and back of their skirts (we see their underwear and a little bit of their buttocks).

VIOLENCE/GORE 7 - Lots and lots of men are shot, stabbed and attacked with guns, bayonets and bombs during several battles; we see lots of dead bodies on the ground, blood on wounded soldiers' clothing, and a few times we see blood squirting from gunshot wounds. A man is tied to a horse and dragged through the sand, then he's hit in the head and shot in the chest (we see blood on his clothing). A man threatening another with a gun is shot and killed. A man is surrounded by a group of men with bayonets; we hear but don't see him being stabbed. A man holds a gun to his head; the camera pans to the ground and we hear a gunshot. We see a few fights (one is a professional boxing match) involving punching, kicking, shoving and choking; we see a few small abrasions and cuts on faces. A man is hit in the head with a plank. A man shoves a woman onto a couch. Bombs destroy a fort.

LANGUAGE 3 - Several anatomical references, a couple of scatological references, many mild obscenities and several insults.

DISCUSSION TOPICS - War, death, gambling, loyalty, honor, courage, friendship.

MESSAGE - Even in the face of adversity, you should never give up.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
