content-ratingsWhy is “Smurfs” rated PG? The MPAA rating has been assigned for “action, language and some rude humor.” The Kids-In-Mind.com evaluation includes an implied relationship between a Smurf and a Smooterpoot, a couple of dancing scenes with Smurfs and humans, many scenes of Smurfs and wizards being transported through portals to other universes where they encounter dangers, many scenes of wizards threatening to destroy Smurfs and get rid of all the goodness in the universe, a wizard threatening to kill a cat, and some implied language and name-calling. Read our parents’ guide below for details on sexual content, violence & strong language.

When Papa Smurf (voiced by John Goodman) is abducted by an evil wizard determined to get a magic book, which is guarded by the Smurfs, Smurfette (voiced by Rihanna) and No Name Smurf (voiced by James Corden) prepare a rescue mission. Smurfs SEX/NUDITY 1

 – A Smurf meets a Smooterpoot and they talk about knowing each other in the past and it is implied that they were in a relationship; another Smurf makes kissing sounds. Smurfs dance in a music sequence that shows them wiggling and thrusting their hips.
Smurfs are shirtless and Smurfette wears a short dress.

Smurfs VIOLENCE/GORE 2

 – A Smurf shoots blasts of energy into the atmosphere opening holes that allow evil wizards to find their village. A Smurf is lifted into the air and taken away in an energy beam and he tells other Smurfs that they are in terrible danger causing them to panic and run around. A wizard tells a man to kill a cat; he swings a baseball bat at the cat and the cat jumps on him screeching. A large press with the press in the shape of a hand is tested as a wizard prepares to smash Smurfs and it slams down making a loud noise. A wizard makes the ground shake and it crumbles. A Smurf falls over a ledge and into a vortex and others try to help him, but he falls and other Smurfs react as if he is dead (we see him again). A car slams into a road sign and Smurfs and a Smooterpoot are thrown to the ground (unharmed). The spirits of Smurfs are taken and put into a swirling cloud.
Smurfs and a wizard are transported to a clay dimension where the wizard’s hands and one foot are pulled off; another dimension is pencil drawn and a Smurf says to watch out for erasers as a wizard’s legs are erased. A wizard punches a Smurf in the face. A large hand reaches into a bag where Smurfs are hiding, scaring them. Smurfs are grabbed by hands that reach out of the ground and pulled under the surface; we see many brightly colored creatures (Smooterpoots) that chatter unintelligibly. A Smurf talks to a wizard and implies that they had an agreement that would save the Smurf.
A zap of energy flashes in the sky and we see rubble and smoke on the ground and hear that many Smooterpoots and Smurfs have been taken away. A wizard orders a mission to undertake an evil extraction. A wizard says that he wants to “smush” Smurfs. A wizard and his cat are locked in a cage. A Smurf is held under a glass dome. A wizard talks about wanting to “get rid of all the goodness in the universe.” A car starts and speeds through a portal.
A wizard is awakened and he shoots something toward the man that awakened him (he falls to the floor but is not harmed). We hear about two wizards wanting to cast the universe into darkness by controlling five magic books. A wizard calls for his food taster to try his food. A tardigrade floats alone and asks for a forever friend; later we see it hugging a character that it is implied will stay with the creature.
Smurfs jump into a swirling portal and a turtle watches and says, “They’re all going to die.” Smurfs are chased by dogs on a city sidewalk; they are nearly struck by motorcycles and a street cleaner but are picked up by other Smurfs swinging from ropes and taken into a drain. Several Smurfs look for someone and are told to jump into a gramophone and follow a song to the end to find him; they are sucked along a flowing portal and land in a gutter and down a water pipe to a dark street in Paris where they meet City Smurfs dressed in dark clothing. Smurfs cling onto people’s shoes to be carried into a dance club, they dodge shoes on a dance floor (one is kicked and thrown across the room unharmed) and cling to cocktail glasses being carried on trays. Several Smurfs jump into a mirrored ball hanging from the ceiling of a dance club and find a secret operation inside. A Smurf runs away fearing that he won’t be able to help with a dangerous situation and another Smurf tackles him to the ground. A car swerves and bumps into another car (we see the second car with dents on it); it later crashes into a room breaking through a wall.
Three wizards are held inside a large water dispenser bottle. A wizard runs through a castle and breathes heavily. A Smurf is shown with its head and partial torso in the mouth of a shark. A Smurf shoots blasts of energy from his hands and when he gives a high five to another Smurf, she is thrown off-camera (she is fine later). A Smurf comes out of the shadows and startles other Smurfs that see him with a green cosmetic facemask on his face. Two Smurfs ride in the pouch of a kangaroo.
Smurfs talk about their names and having a “thing” that gives rise to their name and one Smurf is called No Name because he has not uncovered his “thing” yet and this makes him feel sad, feeling he’s a nobody. Clumsy Smurf trips and falls down several times. A Smurf spits and we see saliva.

Smurfs LANGUAGE 2

 – The word Smurf is used in place of obscenities in a few scenes (You don’t know Smurf about Smurf, load of Smurf, Smurf that), 1 disguised scatological term (I think I just Smurfed my pants), 4 anatomical terms (2 mild, and 2 are bleeped), name-calling (Smurfs are named things like Vanity, Clumsy, Lazy, Grouchy, Worry, Hefty, Brainy, Camouflage, and Out of Focus, vicious garden weasels, idiot, freaky deaky, sarcastic, lame, weak, tough guy, hench minion, garbage, bit of a dud, banger, nobody, imbecile, foolish popinjays, codswallop, evil lair, amateur, weird, stupid, spooky, stress eater, emotionally unavailable), exclamations (huzzah, kablamo, whoa, ditto, oo-la-la, shoot, yay, what the shell, whole evil enchilada, jeez, heck no, psyche, deal’s off, evil enchilada, you’ve got to be kidding me). | profanity glossary |

Smurfs SUBSTANCE USE

 – A dance club scene shows people drinking colorful cocktails, and a man drinks Clamato juice in a Martini glass with an olive.

Smurfs DISCUSSION TOPICS

 – Finding out who you really are, good overcoming evil, failure, being a part of something.

Smurfs MESSAGE

 – Dwelling on what you don’t have is not productive. Kindness always wins.

(Note: A “SpongeBob” short precedes the feature and includes SpongeBob incessantly ringing a bell for service at the Krusty Krab restaurant and Squidward becomes enraged by the sound starting, by smacking SpongeBob’s hand to stop him, throwing the food on tables and eventually destroying the bell by pounding it to dust and pouring it into SpongeBob’s head.)

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
