Why is “Midnight in the Switchgrass” rated R? The MPAA rating has been assigned for “violence, and language throughout.” The Kids-In-Mind.com evaluation includes a few solicitation scenes, some partial nudity, and references to sex trafficking, a murder by strangulation, a stabbing death, reports of missing persons, crime scene photos with bloody wounds shown, people bound and blindfolded, and over 50 F-words and other strong language. A frustrated police detective (Emile Hirsch) joins forces with an exasperated FBI agent (Megan Fox) in order to catch a serial killer (Lukas Haas) who uses truck stops to prey on vulnerable young women. Midnight in the Switchgrass SEX/NUDITY 6
– A woman stands in front of her husband with her robe open and we see her bare breasts. A woman’s dead body is shown wearing a bralette and miniskirt with torn fishnet stockings (we see partial abdomen and legs). A teen girl wears shorts and a low-cut top that reveal cleavage and bare legs to the upper thighs. A photo of a teen girl shows her wearing a top that reveals cleavage, bare shoulders and her bare abdomen. A teen girl wearing a tank top and underwear is shown a few times (cleavage, bare shoulders and legs to the hips are shown). A man takes off his shirt and we see his bare chest, shoulders, partial abdomen and back to upper buttocks.
► A man sniffs clothing he keeps in a hidden tote and he touches his crotch as if masturbating briefly while he flashes back to murdering a teen girl. A teen girl wearing a short, low-cut dress (cleavage, bare shoulders and legs to the upper thighs are seen) asks a man to join her in her motel room for a drink and he accepts; they talk, she sits on the bed, he asks her to dance with him, they stand close together dancing, he holds her head and they kiss, and he caresses her clothed buttocks (please see the Violence/Gore category for more details). A woman wearing a skimpy outfit (cleavage, bare legs to the hips and partial buttocks are seen) invites a man into her room and sits on the bed (implied prostitution); the man tells her to lift up her skirt (please see the Violence/Gore category for more details). A woman wearing a short dress walks outside a motel and we understand that she is soliciting sex (we see her bare legs to the upper thighs). A husband and his wife kiss and hug.
► A man urinates under an overpass and we hear the trickle (we do not see flesh).
Midnight in the Switchgrass VIOLENCE/GORE 6
– A man in a motel room with a teen girl dances with her (please see the Sex/Nudity category for more details), moves his hands around her throat and strangles her to death (we see flashbacks to this event several times). A man is stabbed in the chest with a screwdriver and he falls back on the floor and dies (we do not see blood). A man in a motel room with a woman propositions her, threatens her, punches her in the stomach (we see blood in her mouth) and opens a knife; the woman punches the man and kicks him a few times leaving him moaning on the floor. A teen girl stumbles down a flight of stairs (she seems to be under the influence of drugs) in a motel and walks through a truck stop filling station where drivers approach her and one man grabs her to take her into his truck; she struggles and another man hits the man on the back of the head with a tire iron (he falls to the ground unconscious) and takes the teen to his truck. A man enters a barn, where we see a teen girl bound and blindfolded; she struggles to sit up when he tells her to wash herself and she cries when he yells at her and grabs her around the throat. An investigator shoves a door open and holds a gun to a man’s head asking for information; she says, “I’m gonna kill you.” A man chases another man through the rain and tackles him on the roof of a car where he holds a gun on him until he realizes he is not who he thought he was.
► A woman elbows a man in the stomach when he tries to come on to her in a bar. A woman stumbles through a crowded bar as if she has been drugged and a man takes her arm to lead her out; we see her unconscious and bound in a truck later and the man puts a cloth over her face to sedate her. A woman wakes up chained and gagged in a barn and she tries to break free. A man talks to a woman about another woman that he killed; he tells her that the dress he put on her is the murdered woman’s dress. A teen girl climbs through a storm drain and out into a field where she hides from a man; a young girl sees the teen and screams. A woman tells a teen girl that a man is going to kill her and that she needs to get away. A man goes to a woman’s door and acts threatening, pushing his way into her house and looking around. A man kicks a woman and throws her against a wall, he lifts her off the floor with a collar around her neck attached to a chain and he pounds on the wall next to her yelling that he is going to tear her apart.
► We see crime scene photos of several murdered young women with bloody wounds and bite marks on their bodies. A man is startled and falls back on the ground when he sees a body on the ground under an overpass and he uses an inhaler when he wheezes; we see legs with torn stockings and later we see the body with her eyes open, a bloody wound on her head and some blood on her ears and neck. A teen girl’s dead body is seen in a motel room bathtub with bloody wounds on her arms and back. A young girl moves toward a storm drain and hears someone crying before she runs away. A woman in a hospital is seen with bruises on her throat and neck.
► A police detective tells a woman that her daughter was found dead. A police investigator refers to a woman having died from trauma, and talks about bite marks on the body. We hear several reports about a teen girl’s disappearance and we see missing person’s signs in a few scenes. A woman tells a man, “Some days it’s best to be drinking.” A woman talks about her mother dying when she was young and that her father would drink and become violent; she says that she and her sister would hide outside to avoid him until very late at night. Several people argue over jurisdiction at a murder scene. A man says that a dead body had its skull cracked in 6 places. A young woman says that a man “Got busted up in a car crash.” A reference is made to a man blowing his brains out in a tub. A woman says that her mother killed herself by sitting in the car while it was running in the garage. A man tells a woman, “If I stay, you’re gonna get me killed.” We hear that an infant has a fever. A teen girl says that a man “Puts a needle in me every night and I can’t move.”

A woman drinks from a glass of whiskey and she pours one for a man (he does not drink), people drink from bottles of beer in a bar, a comment is made about someone having too much booze, a man drinks a beer at home, and people drink and smoke in a crowded bar. A man smokes a cigarette in a few scenes, and a woman smokes in her house.
