Chaos Walking | 2021 | PG-13 | – 2.5.4

Why is “Chaos Walking” rated PG-13? The MPAA rating has been assigned for “violence and language.” The Kids-In-Mind.com evaluation includes a couple of imagined kissing scenes, partial male nudity, encounters with native beings on another planet, several chase sequences that end in injury, a few deaths by gunshot including bloody wounds, the death of a horse and the murder of a dog, threats of violence against a young woman, and some strong language. In the near future, the settlers of a colony on a new planet are all men and able to see and hear each other’s thoughts. When a young woman (Daisy Ridley) from an Earth scout spaceship crashes on the planet, a young colonist (Tom Holland) learns that women’s thoughts are not observable, and his colony has been hiding a very dark secret. Chaos Walking SEX/NUDITY 2

 – A young man takes off his clothes to go into water and we see his bare chest, abdomen, back and buttocks.
► A young man imagines kissing a young woman and she sees the image and says, “What are you doing” and he becomes embarrassed.
► Two men lie in a bed together (it’s not clear whether they are a couple or not). A man holds another man and kisses his head as he dies. Men make comments about never having seen a real woman before. A young man imagines a young woman asking him to kiss her, and he becomes embarrassed when the young woman storms out of the room having heard his thoughts. A young man thinks, “Is she gonna kiss me?”

Chaos Walking VIOLENCE/GORE 5

 – We understand that humans have settled on a planet other than Earth and the planet we see has imbued men with the ability to share their thoughts; we see colorful clouds around men’s heads that represent their thoughts.
► A man grabs a young woman and pulls on her talking about killing her, she fires a weapon at him that sets him on fire and we see him completely engulfed as he stumbles away. A young man looks through a young woman’s bag and pulls out what turns out to be a weapon; he squeezes it and it fires causing projectile beams to flash around inside a building blowing holes through the walls and the young woman runs away (no one is harmed). Many armed men on horseback arrive at a farm and interrogate two men about the whereabouts of a young woman; when she speeds out of a barn on a motorbike, a young man tries to shoot her and another young man punches him in the face, the men chase and shoot at her, one young man follows on horseback and they shoot at him too, and three men exchange gunfire (we see bloody wounds); the young woman jumps over a ridge and tumbles down a hill (we see blood on her face and she moans), the horse and the young man also tumble over the ridge and the horse breaks its leg (we see blood) and the young man kills it with a knife.
► Armed men on horseback ride toward a settlement and settlers arm themselves; they exchange words, one man raises his gun to shoot and he is shot and explodes. A young man and a young woman climb into a boat and row along a river chased by a man on a horse holding a machete: they float toward a waterfall and fall over it, the man follows and grabs the young woman pulling her into the water (she cannot swim), the young man tries to reach her, his dog barks at the man and the young man pulls the young woman to safety as she gasps and coughs; the man holds the dog underwater and drowns it as the young man screams for him to stop. A young woman charges toward a man, they struggle briefly and she hits him with a stick causing him to fall back into the wreckage of a vessel (we do not see him again). A man with a gun threatens another man if a young man does not come out from hiding; the man hits the other man in the head with the gun and the young man comes out, the man shoots the other man and he falls over with a bloody wound on his chest. A young man punches a man in the face and we see his bloody nose, the young man runs away and the man shoots at him hitting him in the shoulder (we see blood). A man with a gun threatens a woman with a large bloody wound on her chest (we understand that he killed her).
► Men on horseback with weapons chase a young woman through woods and a fence grows up out of the ground stopping her and they surround her, take her to town and a man questions her. A capsule landing on a planet loses control and shakes violently as we hear someone say, “We’re gonna die” and see flames glowing outside the capsule; a young woman inside scrambles to get out of the capsule and we see her later with cuts on her face but she is otherwise unharmed; the rest of the crew is dead and we see graves. A woman shoots at a man outside a barn and another man goes inside to find a young man and a young woman. A young man climbs a sheer wall in the wreckage of a transport vessel, nearly falling a couple of times, and reaches an antenna to reconnect it.
► A large creature with humanoid shape and no facial features attacks a young man, grabs him by the leg and drags him; the young man fights with the creature (we see it is missing half an arm at the elbow) stabs it repeatedly (we see green goo seeping into the water) and nearly kills it, but lets it go. A young man with a knife wrestles a creature in water and we see him stabbing it repeatedly as he is pulled underwater and then surfaces; he cooks pieces over a fire. A young man spooks a horse causing it to rear up and throw its rider on the ground (no injuries are seen). A man confronts a young man and swings at him and the young man falls to the ground; he then says his face hurts and that at least he didn’t bust his lip this time. A settlement is shown with only men and we are told that the native beings of the planet slaughtered them. A young man is suspicious of a young woman and says, “You might hit me over the head with a rock.” A young man imagines being beaten up by a few men (he is not). A young man imagines a horse charging toward him and he is startled. A large flying vessel descends toward the ground and many armed men on horseback run away.
► A young man chases a young woman through the woods and calls out to her; he finds wreckage of a crashed capsule in the woods and flames burn around it. A young man and a man argue in a few scenes. A man says that women have “…no noise and no soul.” A young man says, “You can’t trust girls.” A man repeats that he wants to make a martyr of a young woman. A young woman says that her parents died on a transport ship on the way to set up a new colony. A man tells a young man that anyone from a certain settlement “Gets the rope,” threatening him. A woman tells a man, “There will be no threats.” A man says to another man, “You hide your noise like a woman.” A man says, “Weakness rots from the inside.” We understand that a young man cannot read.
► A young man walks through woods and large hard-shelled creatures skitter around him, he throws a knife and pins one to a tree (we see some goo); he removes the creature and throws it to his dog. After a fall, we see bloody cuts on a young man’s shoulder and arm. A man has a scar on his face. A young man imagines eating a part of a creature that is poison and we see him gagging and coughing. A young man spits out a bite of a fruit (we see bits).
► Opening text reads, “Without a filter a man is just chaos walking.” Men mock the young man and call him weak repeatedly.
