Why is “Boogie” rated R? The MPAA rating has been assigned for “language throughout including sexual references, and some drug use.” The Kids-In-Mind.com evaluation includes an implied sex scene, an unplanned pregnancy, references to anatomy and sexual activity, a fight leading to an arrest for assault, several basketball sequences with shoving on the court, many arguments with a few face slaps, and about 60 F-words and other strong language. When a young man’s (Taylor Takahashi) dreams of playing basketball on a college scholarship are thwarted by an unscrupulous manager, he has to figure out whose dreams he has really been chasing. Boogie SEX/NUDITY 4

 – A young woman tells a young man in a bedroom, “Quit stalling and pull it out”; the young man seems nervous and makes a comment about wondering if the size of his genitals will be adequate, the young woman unfastens the young man’s pants and appears to be looking at his crotch (we do not see anything) and they lie back in bed and kiss (sex is implied).
► A young man kisses a young woman and she says, “That was like a thank-you kiss.” A man touches a woman’s arm and she pulls away; her son seems alarmed by the idea that they might be having an affair. A man tries to goad a young man about having had a relationship with the young man’s girlfriend before him. A young man asks a young woman, “Ever been in love?” A young man and a young woman stare at each other while working out in a gym and the young man tells the young woman that she has a pretty vagina after watching her using the hip abductor machine. A young man says that his “stripper name” is Boogie.
► A young woman wears a short dress that reveals cleavage and bare legs to the upper thighs. A young woman wears a cropped top that reveals cleavage and bare abdomen in a few scenes. A young man wears boxers and a T-shirt that reveal his bare legs to the thighs.

Boogie VIOLENCE/GORE 3

 – A man punches another man in the face, and then punches him several times behind a table (we do not see any blood or injuries). A man slaps another man’s hand when he reaches to shake it. People on a basketball court pile on top of each other during a game (we do not see any injuries).
► People on two basketball teams yell at each other and shove each other before a game causing the referee to cancel the game. Several men play basketball and one young man is shoved to the ground; he holds his leg and seems to be hurt and the man that pushed him mocks him. A man is arrested and taken away in handcuffs; we hear that he is on parole and a man is pressing charges against him for assault.
► A husband and his wife argue bitterly and he stands up as if he is going to hit her and she moves closer to him, prodding him (he does not hit her). A wife yells at her husband about having gone to prison. A man and a woman speak to a fortune-teller and the woman becomes upset about expecting a baby. A woman yells at her son in several scenes and hits him in the face and head a few times. A young man talks to his mother about her being miserable and complaining about past due bills and her husband all the time. A young woman yells at a young man a few times and shoves him. A coach yells at his team in a couple of scenes. A woman offers a man a cup of tea and he declines, referring to “the sunken place.” A young woman talks about having been swimming with wild dolphins and seeing their flesh badly scarred. A man says, “We lost the war and this country resents us.” A man says, “Snitches get stitches.” A young man says, “I wouldn’t hurt someone to win a game.” A young woman asks a young man, “What is wrong with you?” A reference is made to a young man being either dead or in jail. A song’s lyrics include phrases like, “Am I a killa?” A man talks about having IBS. A man talks about having a bowel movement in a bush.
