"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME
Tumbleweeds | 1999 | PG-13 | - 3.2.5
A free-spirited mother heads to Southern California with her young daughter after yet another one of her failed relationships forces them to hit the road. With Janet McTeer, Kimberly Brown, Gavin O'Connor, Jay O. Sanders, Lois Smith, Laurel Holloman, Michael J. Pollard, Noah Emmerich, Ashley Buccille and Cody McMains. [1:42]
SEX/NUDITY 3 - Some sexual innuendo (including references to and a gesture of male masturbation) and many kisses (a few are passionate and a couple are between a boy and girl). In a "morning-after" scene, we see a shirtless man in bed and a woman in a slip making breakfast; later, she sits on his lap and they kiss while passing toothpaste and beer between their mouths (a girl walks in the room while they're doing this). A woman teaches a girl how to kiss (they practice on apples); also, a woman and girl have a few discussions about breasts and menstruation (in one scene, they stick unused menstruation pads on their foreheads, in their shirts and on the crotch of a wicker female figure). A man gives a woman a skimpy piece of lingerie in front of a girl. A woman pulls down her robe in front of a man (we only see the top of her bare shoulders). We see part of a woman's panty-clad buttocks when she lifts the dress she's wearing and tries to iron it (a man is standing behind her when this happens); we also see a woman in her bra while she changes clothes in front of two girls, the back of a woman sleeping in a bra, a few posters of scantily clad women in a gas station, many people in bathing suits and a man's bare chest through his open shirt. A woman wears a cleavage-revealing top in nearly every scene.
VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - A man and woman scream at each other and he knocks things to the floor, throws a plate at her, nearly punches her and grabs her arm (a girl in another room overhears the fight). A man yells at a woman and a woman yells at a girl. Twice, a man angrily grabs a book out of a girl's hands. A man is punched in a movie on TV. A woman kicks her car when she realizes it's been broken into. A girl passes gas loudly a couple of times and she and a woman joke about flatulence a little bit. We hear (but don't see) a woman urinating. A woman talks about having a coffee enema.
LANGUAGE 5 - One F-word and two F-word derivatives, a couple of profane finger gestures, several anatomical references, lots of scatological references (some spoken by a girl), lots of mild obscenities and an insult.
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Mother-daughter relationships, dysfunctional/abusive romantic relationships, codependence, running away, puberty, drunkenness.
MESSAGE - Running away from your problems never solves them; you don't need to be in a relationship to feel happy and fulfilled.
