Tales from the Hood | 1995 | R | - 2.9.9
In the tradition of "Tales From the Crypt," "Tales From the Hood" tells four tales of terror.
SEX/NUDITY 2 - A couple of scantily clad nurses. A naked woman is seen through plastic so that nudity is barely evident. A man is shown in very brief briefs.
VIOLENCE/GORE 9 - A man is beaten up by cops: he's hit, kicked and his head is pushed through a car window. A man is pushed off a pier in his car. A man urinates on a grave. A corpse comes out of the grave holding a man's beating heart. A man is attacked by the corpse and we see his headless body. A man is crucified to a wall with hypodermics and a hypodermic flies into his mouth. A boy is taunted and beaten up by his classmates, another boy falls down stairs. In an extended scene a man beats up a woman. A man becomes a twisted heap on the floor, and he's shown burning. In an extended scene a man is attacked by malevolent dolls which bite him to death. A man is forced to watch a montage of lynchings and murders. Murder victims are shown with bloody wounds and mutilated bodies and faces (one victim is missing half his head and brain matter is evident). A man turns into a hideous, huge demon and we see Hell, complete with flames and writhing patrons.
LANGUAGE 9 - 50+ F-words, 50+ scatological terms, many milder obscenities, and many racial epithets.
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Racism and police brutality, murder, domestic violence (spouse and child abuse), drugs, gang warfare, lynchings, prison and rehabilitation, the Ku Klux Klan, Hell.
MESSAGE - Racism is still prevalent today; young African-Americans are killing each other.
CAVEATS
Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.
We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.
Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
Gladiator II - 2.7.2
Wicked: Part I - 3.4.2
Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin. - 1.5.3
