"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME

Solaris | 2002 | PG-13 | - 5.4.5

A remake of the classic Russian sci-fi film about a space station that's orbiting an ocean world called Solaris. Suddenly, strange things begin happening on the station: the commander of an expedition to the planet dies mysteriously, and the crew starts seeing old acquaintances, including some that are dead. George Clooney stars as a psychologist who comes to the station to investigate. Also with Natascha McElhone, Jeremy Davies, Viola Davis and Ulrich Tukur. [1:39]

SEX/NUDITY 5 - A nude man and woman kiss passionately (we see them each from the back exposing bare backs and buttocks), caress each other and thrust while having sex (we see the man's bare chest). A nude man and woman lie on a bed talking (they lie on their stomachs and we see the man's bare buttocks and bare chest). A man and a woman kiss romantically in a few scenes. A woman touches a man's shoulder tenderly while he sleeps. We see a man wearing a tank T-shirt and boxer shorts in a few scenes, and we see a man bare-chested in a couple of scenes. A woman wears a very tight-fitting dress.

VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - A woman lies on the floor with a bubbling liquid around her face; we see a line of burned skin next to her mouth and hear that she drank liquid oxygen and is dead. We see a dead man with blood on his hand and face and he's tinged a little blue. A man goes into a morgue, finds three bodies, opens a bag and sees a dead man (we see his discolored face), and opens another bag (we see a smear of blood on the bag, but we do not see the corpse). A woman takes a number of pills to commit suicide (we see her limp hand). A dead woman with a large wound on her face begins to flail and convulse, the wound heals instantly and she is alive again. A man yells at and shoves a woman and throws things in a rage. A man enters a space station and sees a trail of blood on the floor, passageways and stairway. A man cuts himself deeply on the finger while slicing vegetables (we see it bleed). A woman is locked in an escape pod and launched into space (we see her terrified face through the window). A man walks through a space station, a loud noise starts ringing out, he cringes from the pain and collapses. A man talks about having killed another man. A man describes how two people died; one was suicide, one was shot and killed by a security team, and a third person disappeared. There is a discussion about a security team having been lost while on a mission to investigate a space station. A man is terrified when he awakens to find his wife (who had died some time ago) in bed next to him. We hear that a space station is being pulled toward a planet and will be destroyed (we watch as it enters the atmosphere and begins to break apart). We hear maniacal laughter. Although not made clear, it seems as though a character has an abortion.

LANGUAGE 5 - 1 F-word, 6 scatological terms, 1 religious profanity, 1 religious exclamation.

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Love, morality, suicide, grief, death of a spouse, depression, agoraphobia, insomnia, free will, the existence of God, origins of humanity, mortality, abortion, forgiveness.

MESSAGE - There are no answers in life, only choices.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
