"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME
A Night at the Roxbury | 1998 | PG-13 | - 5.2.5
Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan play the head-bopping, club-hopping Butabi brothers of Saturday Night Live fame. [1:21]
SEX/NUDITY 5 - Some sexual innuendo and a kiss. A shirtless man touches a scantily clad woman's breast while in bed; she then climbs on top of him and thrusts and moans. We hear people having intercourse, then see them -- from quite a distance -- thrusting for a few seconds. Intercourse is implied in two scenes: in one, a woman tugs a man's pants off and in the other, a woman crawls on top of a man who tries to get out from underneath her and they eventually fall onto the floor together. It's implied a woman performs fellatio (she's underneath the covers and we see the man's pleasured expression). A woman licks her lips at a man and simulates fellatio on a strawberry, and a woman puts a man's hand on her clothed breast. We see a topless woman's bare back and briefly see the bottom of her breast from a side-and-back view. Lots of scantily clad women (in bikinis, short skirts, cleavage revealing tops) and shirtless men (sometimes in boxers or swimsuits). We see most of two men's bare buttocks when they wear tiny swim trunks and a few women's bare buttocks (they're wearing thong underwear).
VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - Mostly played for laughs: A car is rear-ended, but no one is hurt. In several dance club scenes, men grab women and thrust against them while dancing, sometimes shoving or knocking them down. Men are dragged out of a building. Men threaten to punch each other, a man accidentally slaps another, a woman knees a man in the groin and a woman hits a man with her purse. A few shoves and a pratfall, and a man sticks a piece of licorice into a sleeping man's mouth and nose, then eats it.
LANGUAGE 5 - Two F-words (one is fairly garbled), lots of anatomical references, a couple of scatological references, a few mild obscenities and many insults.
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Dance clubs, being accepted, dysfunctional families, dreams and goals, unhealthy love relationships, loyalty.
MESSAGE - Brothers should come first.
CAVEATS
Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.
We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.
Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
