"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME
Boiler Room | 2000 | R | - 3.3.10
A college drop-out (Giovanni Ribisi) joins a brokerage house with the promise of becoming a quick millionaire and soon discovers it's too good to be true. Also with Vin Diesel, Nia Long, Nicky Katt, Scott Caan, Ron Rifkin, Jamie Kennedy, Taylor Nichols, Bill Nichols, Tom Everett Scott, Ben Affleck and David Younger. [2:00]
SEX/NUDITY 3 - Several instances of sexual innuendo (including references to fellatio and masturbation) and a few kisses. We see a presumably post-coitus couple talking in bed (only the sides of their faces and his bare shoulders are visible). We glimpse a small, classic nude female statue.
VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - A man holds another on the ground and punches his face repeatedly (afterwards, the man appears to be unconscious and some blood is visible on the side of his face). Some grabbing and shoving (sometimes people are shoved to the ground or out of a door); at the end of one scene two groups of men begin shoving each other and it's implied that it turns into a brawl. A man kicks a table. Some scenes of yelling.
LANGUAGE 10 - About 150 F-words, lots of anatomical references and slang terms, lots of scatological references, several mild obscenities, several insults and several racial and ethnic slurs.
DISCUSSION TOPICS - The stock market, stockbrokers, unethical business practices, morality, deception, strained father-son relationships, parental approval, misogyny, homophobia.
MESSAGE - There's no honor in building your wealth by cheating it from others.
CAVEATS
Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.
We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.
Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
