The Ballad of Little Jo | 1993 | R | - 6.5.3
Suzy Amis stars as a woman who disguises herself as a man in order to survive the rough, sexist world of 1866.
SEX/NUDITY 6 - There are a couple of brief love scenes: the participants are topless. There's also an opaque mirror reflection of a nude woman, and another woman is shown in a sheer negligee. Men are shown taking turns in visiting prostitutes. There's an attempted rape, which is halted when the woman pulls a gun. References to oral intercourse.
VIOLENCE/GORE 5 - A woman slashes her face with a straight razor; we hear her scream and see the resulting scar. A man cuts a woman's face, and we see some blood. A number of people are shot, some in slow motion. A family is shown after being massacred, and one woman is shot in the back while she's running away. A couple of sheep are shown after an encounter with a wolf; we then see the wolf being shot.
LANGUAGE 3 - Some scatological language, some cussing and some sexually explicit references.
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Pregnancy out of wedlock, premarital sex, loneliness, opium use, gender-bending.
MESSAGE - Women are equal to men; and, they can be as tough as men.
CAVEATS
Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.
We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.
Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
Gladiator II - 2.7.2
Wicked: Part I - 3.4.2
Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin. - 1.5.3
