"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME
Wind | 1992 | PG-13 | - 4.1.3
Matthew Modine plays a sailor who after he's lost his girl (Jennifer Grey), also loses the America's cup, a prize America has held for over a hundred years. The question now becomes whether or not he can regain either.
SEX/NUDITY 4 - The movie opens with Grey sitting on a rock-obviously nude-backside toward the audience. Although unmarried, she and Modine do make love inside the hull of a boat-although the audience only sees the kissing, embracing and removal of clothing-from the shoulders. Later, Modine sleeps with Abigail-you see them in bed together, kissing. Meanwhile, Grey appears to be carrying on with another guy-but you really never see this. One scene which is pretty "sexy" is where they're lying facing each other (head to toe)-he without a shirt-she in silky pj's-as she brings a cigarette to his lips with her toes.
VIOLENCE/GORE 1 - Not a lot of "real" violence. The most gruesome moment happens during the first race when a sailor climbs the mast to fix a sail and gets caught in the rigging; he bangs back and forth against the mast and hangs precariously int he air. Of course, he is eventually gotten down and we're given the impression that he'll be alright. Then, when Modine approaches Robertson for backing, he discovers he's gone a little bit crazy. Robertson pulls a gun, first he offers Modine the chance to shoot him, then he puts it to Modine's head and pulls the trigger which only clicks. Later, there's a fistfight between Modine and his tactician during the second race. It gets even more rowdy when the Australian team throws in a few punches as well.
LANGUAGE 3 - The F-word is mouthed, not heard.
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Premarital sex.
MESSAGE - The importance of principles, having the tenacity to follow your dream, and having the one you love involved in the process. Modine actually says that winning the race wouldn't mean a thing to him if Grey wasn't there with him.
CAVEATS
Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.
We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.
Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
