Thelma the Unicorn | 2024 | PG | – 1.3.2

content-ratingsWhy is “Thelma the Unicorn” rated PG? The MPAA rating has been assigned for “rude humor.” The Kids-In-Mind.com evaluation includes men wearing dance costumes that accentuate part of their anatomies, several explosions that leave no injuries, trucks tipping over and spilling their contents on characters, a character trying to undermine another character, many arguments, and some strong language. Read our parents’ guide below for details on sexual content, violence & strong language.

A singing farm pony (voiced by Brittany Howard) wishes she could be a unicorn, and by magic her wish is granted, but she finds that her new life is not as happy as she thought it would be. Also with the voices of Will Forte, Jemaine Clement, Edi Patterson, Fred Armisen, Zach Galifianakis, Jon Heder and Shondrella Avery. Directed by Jared Hess & Lynn Wang. [Running Time: 1:30]

Thelma the Unicorn SEX/NUDITY 1

 – A man makes a pony pretend to be the girlfriend of a famous but not very smart horse. A character says a male action figure has a fake nipple that is a ninja star, and a plastic disc falls from the doll’s clothed chest (it does nothing).
In several scenes, three men wearing tights with tank tops or bare chests dance and swivel their hips; they later add a few dancing horses to the act that wear the same clothing and dance. A close-up shows the buttocks of a man wearing very tight tights. A man pulls up a pant leg to show his hairy leg to above the knee.

Thelma the Unicorn VIOLENCE/GORE 3

 – A man sends a small missile to destroy a limousine carrying a man, a woman and two donkeys; the loud explosion creates a cloud of smoke and the occupants exit, coughing but uninjured. In a fantasy scene, many medieval people use catapults to throw large fireballs at a village, leaving no visible injuries.
Three animal characters are cornered in a large warehouse room where several men accost them, a donkey kicks them to the floor and breaks a water main on which other people slide out of control; the animals escape, and a woman is shocked by a wire in the water, but no injuries are evident.
A pony dodges a tractor in a field. A bus swerves to avoid hitting a small truck, and both sets of wheels squeal. Dynamite blows up an outhouse with fire and smoke (no injuries are shown). A truck filled with paint and glitter tips and a pony is coated with the paint; she looks like a unicorn when she glues a carrot to her forehead; the truck tips again later and spills white paint and feathers onto a donkey to make him look like Pegasus.
A group of men throw eggs at a pony, covering it with debris, and chase it through a street, shouting. An elderly sight-impaired woman hits a couple of people with her walking cane, but they are not injured. A narwhal breaks off its horn.
A pony begins shouting at a panel of three human judges when they won’t let the pony sing. People and animals laugh at a pony when it falls through a large drum. A narwhal is rude to people and animals, spewing blowhole water on a crowd and later, several individuals, knocking them down; it insults a human assistant and many other humans and animals. In two scenes, a concert crowd boos performers for several seconds. A pony argues with a donkey and a llama in several scenes, and with a man in a few scenes. A few scenes feature very loud heavy metal and rock music for several seconds.
A narwhal on a cable tries to attack a small pony that looks like a unicorn on a stage by swinging over it several times, screaming; but, it falls through the stage floor and dust rises; some people run across the stage with their hair on fire (we don’t know why). A narwhal orders a woman to “find some dirt” on a pony to end its career; the woman finds out that the pony is not really a unicorn and video records its makeup and horn partially coming off. A woman throws water onto a pony in a washroom (we hear a toilet flush off-screen), and all the makeup and the horn come off completely and the narwhal later eats the carrot. A pony disappears and many people and animals form search parties to find it. Three police cruisers rush through a street, using sirens and flashing lights, but we don’t see who they are chasing. A horse puts a hoof print on a cremation urn, it breaks to pieces, and a young girl shouts “Grandma!”
A huge cart of manure overturns onto a pony and swarms of flies buzz around in a couple of scenes. A horse burps several times and brings chewed food into its mouth to swell the cheeks, burps again, and talks or sings about cud; it later vomits an ocean of yellow substance over and down a table. We hear a mention of cholera and dysentery, and two mentions of pinkeye; a horse has a reddened eye when a pony throws manure onto it, and someone says it is pink eye. A carrot flies through the air and lodges into the buttock cleavage of a truck driver sitting at a table. A donkey takes a newspaper into an outhouse. A man slobbers on a hamburger. A man pulls out his false teeth and drools. A pony spits out its huge false teeth. A perfume factory is filled with clouds of purple mist. A pony says it will flush itself down a toilet. A character sprays air deodorizer on a man.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
