The Secret Lives of Dentists | 2003 | R | - 7.4.5
A married couple (Hope Davis and Campbell Scott) share not only their lives and three children, with each other but also their dental practice. However, neither is happy with the way their life together turned out. They have become distant and suspicions of infidelity lead to imaginary encounters with a patient (Denis Leary) who offers marital advice. Based on "The Age of Grief" by Jane Smiley. Also with Robin Tunney, Denis Leary, Hope Davis and Adele D'Man. Directed by Alan Rudolph. [1:44]
SEX/NUDITY 7 - A man and woman have sex against a wall (we see his bare legs, thrusting and hear them moaning). A man kisses a woman, unbuttons her blouse and caresses her breasts (not visible), reaches between her legs and they lean back on a recliner kissing. A man imagines a woman (his wife) having sex with two men and another woman: we see a man and a woman kissing, and the women kissing and caressing each other. A man imagines two men having sex with a woman (his wife): she climbs on the lap of one, the other man kisses her from behind, they all kiss and grope each other. A man and a woman kiss a few times, and a man kisses a woman's foot tenderly. A woman caresses a man's leg. A woman wears a low-cut dress revealing cleavage and bare back and shoulders and sings to a man seductively. A man kisses a woman on the cheek and they embrace. A man and a woman sleep in bed together. A woman wears a tank top that reveals cleavage, and a woman wears a short top that shows her bare abdomen. A man is bare-chested in bed. We see a woman's bare, pregnant abdomen and a man kisses it. We see a man sitting on the toilet with his pants around his ankles.
VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - A man imagines violently pulling teeth out of a patient's mouth and his hands, the bib and the patient are covered with blood. A man and a woman argue and the man says, "I could kill you." A man is injected with a hypodermic in the mouth, we hear drilling and we see the man squeezing the chair arms. We see a tooth being pulled and it's bloody. We hear squishy sounds when a dentist examines a mouth. A man remembers riding a bike down a steep road with a woman on the handlebars. A man imagines literally kicking a woman out of a house and then imagines kicking a woman repeatedly while she cowers on the floor. A little girl appears to be hallucinating from a fever and is whisked to the hospital. A man shoots a gun and catches a dead squirrel in a net. A woman wakes moaning in pain from a cramp in her foot. A man talks about bodies being destroyed (burning, decaying, etc.) but teeth remaining intact. We see X-rays of teeth. A baby slaps people in the face several times. A baby yells and dumps her plate of food on the table, a man takes her from the table yelling at her and leaves her in her bedroom (she continues to yell). A man yells loudly in frustration (he's by himself). On TV a person is shot (we don't see much) and we see a part of another show where someone is attacked by presumably an alien entity and the man gasps and gags. People find spoiling food in their refrigerator (its moldy and hairy). A man urinates and we see the stream, a man vomits, a little girl vomits (we hear splat and see goo on the floor), a little girl steps in goo, we hear a woman vomiting. A man burps.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
