Sausage Party | 2016 | R | - 9.6.10

In this adult animated tale an angry jar of mustard alerts his grocery store cohorts that the gods they believe in and the Great Beyond afterlife are all fiction and all the groceries will be murdered and eaten. A hotdog, a bun, a bagel, a flatbread and a taco (voiced by Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Edward Norton and Salma Hayek) journey the aisles to find the truth and meet disturbing realities. Also with the voices of Michael Cera, James Franco, Bill Hader, Jonah Hill, Nick Kroll and David Krumholtz. Directed by Conrad Vernon & Greg Tiernan. [1:28]

SEX/NUDITY 9 - A rapid sequence of scenes shows food items having various sorts of multiple partner sex (seemingly oral, vaginal and anal, although the food items have no genitals): Four items make an anal-vaginal-oral daisy chain, all thrusting wildly as a taco sucks violently on a hotdog; a hotdog slides into a bun, turns face down and thrusts; and close-ups show the faces of food items having orgasms (moaning, screaming, and their eyes rolling back in their heads).
A male douche bottle jumps into the trousers of a male grocery clerk and the clerk shouts that something went up his anus; the douche opens the zipper from inside and laughs maniacally, pinches the shouting man's genitals (which we do see) and grabs a hotdog climbing the man's leg, the man grabs hold of the hotdog and appears to be masturbating it but is trying to get the food off him.
A male douche bottle sucks the juice out from between the legs of a male juice box. A female taco sucks the bottom part of a bun between the buns legs. A bun falls onto a hotdog and they separate nervously as another character tells the bun and hotdog that they are morally loose. A female taco tells a bun, "I have crotch feelings for you" as the taco rubs the buttocks of the bun, who says it is not right, because the gods are against same-sex sex.
A woman (animated) is wearing skin tight pants wiggles her behind as we see it in close-up and we see her groin area in close-up from inside a grocery cart and at home, where she digs into her crotch with one hand and says she needs to douche. A woman in a store wears a tiny mini skirt. A female taco and a female bun have short, bare human legs with high heels on their feet (the bun has bumps representing breasts and bulbous buttocks that waggle as she walks) and the bun and other buns have a few inches of lipstick on their bun openings. A line of dancing olives bends over away from the camera to expose their pit holes.
A male Twinkie kisses a male hotdog, who pulls away. A male bottle of alcohol seems to have sex with two female vodka bottles that bump against his front. A flatbread tells a bagel, "Get your nose out of my crotch" and they kiss each other later. A bun and a hotdog roll off-screen and we hear sexual moaning. A hotdog pulls a string of pearls out of the bottom of a bun. A bun sits back and her eyes look dreamy with her lower half below the frame with her legs and shoes sticking up and spread apart, into the frame, but we cannot see her lower half.
A bagel and a flatbread tell each other they will perform oral sex on each other. A bun argues with a hotdog and says she would rather have a parsnip, a pickle, or an eggplant in her and the hotdog says eggplant is too big for her. A male douche bottle attempts to reach a woman throughout the film, shouting that he wants to "Get up in that." A used condom in an alley speaks to a hotdog, who rushes away. In an apartment, a toilet paper roll is bent, telling the hotdog that a man did something to it (masturbation is implied). A hotdog says, "I've never been in a bun before," and a bun says to the hotdog, "I've never opened up before. See how tight I am?" as they make sexually suggestive hand gestures. A flatbread tells a bun to cover herself up and have some modesty. A female taco tells a bun that they must not give into their "crotch urges" and she later says that they all have wild fire between their legs.

VIOLENCE/GORE 6 - A man tries to put a hotdog into boiling water, but it jumps out as an axe on the wall overhead falls; a hotdog pulls open an air vent in a grocery store to allow the severed head of the man to fall to the floor (we see some blood around the neck and the eyes rolled back in the head). A woman in a kitchen peels a screaming potato and sticks him into boiling water as other groceries shout in fear and the woman picks up two baby carrots and eats them (we see them screaming inside her mouth as she chews); a huge carving knife cuts a screaming tomato in close-up, the woman stabs a hotdog through the center with the blade slicing him in half (she aims at another hotdog and misses) and we see screaming cheese bubbling inside a microwave. A crazy douche bottle drinks a bottle of vodka, grows arm muscles and big teeth, and becomes violent; he later breaks a bottle of tequila, drinks some and throws the bottle neck into the crotch of a food package between its legs (it grabs its crotch and moans). As an imitation of Stephen Hawking, a big wad of chewed bubble gum sits folded up in a wheelchair, using an electronic voice and wearing glasses; he later puts a match to some jet fuel and flies a man through a skylight and into the sky to explode as fireworks and peanuts in the shell catch a bloody eye as it falls.
Large kitchen knives fall around a hotdog and he escapes. Cookbook pages and a hotdog's imagination in two scenes show hotdogs, hamburgers, pizza slices, and other foods with bulging eyes, screaming as humans take large bites out of them. A close-up in shades of gray shows shopping cart wheels smashing jars and packages, squishing foods that scream as smoke rises to look like a battlefield; a banana peel slips down and black eye and mouth openings look dead (like a skull), a can of spaghetti splits and the contents spill out like intestines, a peanut butter jar cries over a broken raspberry jam jar and smears red jam on his face, pools of liquids run out of glass jars and a pack of screaming hotdogs is thrown into the trash and placed in a dumpster. A hotdog hangs on the running board of a fast moving car and reaches a house. A woman spills food items out of her cart and a mustard jar is caught by a hotdog and a bun on the side of the cart, but they all fall.
Hotdogs dip frilled tooth picks into a large boiling spoon of drugs and shoot the picks into grocery shoppers, who become woozy and fall. A woman grabs a hotdog and then loses it. A monster douche bottle takes a bite out of a hotdog, but it escapes and wears a bandage. A man stomps on food items, but falls unconscious from a drugged pick. A pizza slice slams onto a window. A bun pulls the hair of a woman. Food items beat people up and gumballs shoot like bullets. Red licorice ropes tie up people and drag them away. A roll of Mentos-like candy drops falls onto a man and a large bottle of pop jams itself down the man's throat. Small fires break out around a store and a clerk shoots a pistol three times, hitting nothing. We see many humans frozen in upright freezer cases.
Sentient food and beverage items have legs, shoes, arms, and three-fingered white gloves, as well as faces; before supermarket opening, the foods sing a hymn to the gods until a mustard jar screams about the afterlife being a hoax, causing other food items to argue loudly and a bagel and a flatbread argue continually over cultural conflicts. A hotdog says, "The gods are evil, they kill us." A hotdog and a bun argue about belief and faith. A hotdog tells another hotdog that he slams others' belief without giving them hope.
Six food items step through a Stargate made of a toilet seat and Christmas lights and enter a vortex with a whirling wormhole.

SUBSTANCE USE - Two men make a drug deal in an alley with a small baggie of white powder sold and the buyer takes it home and boils it in a spoon to make "bath salts" and injects yellow liquid in a hypodermic into his arm below the frame (he becomes woozy and laughs, falls asleep, moans, and awakens to hallucinations of brilliant colors of mist and talking groceries), a powdery herb-drug is thrown onto a campfire and is loaded into a kazoo and a few items smoke from the kazoo and look dazed, six food items smoke from a kazoo before entering a Stargate, and a character says, "I'm hankering for a hunk of herb (drugs)." A wild party happens in the liquor aisle of a supermarket where dozens of cans of beer and bottles of wine and other alcohol dance and shout, a bar has bottles of salsa and party dips drinking Tequila and beer at tables and a 4-stool bar, a dark shelf has a dark bottle of alcohol painted in war paint and its name is "Fire Water," and many Saki bottles walk around an Asian foods aisle. A man's cigarette lighter is embossed with a large green marijuana leaf image.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
