"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME

Joshua | 2002 | G | - 1.2.1

Religious film about a gentle stranger (Tony Goldwyn) who comes to a small town where everyone knows everyone else, but there is little sense of community. The stranger begins to rebuild a Christian church that was destroyed during a storm and as people join in on the project, they discover what it is to be a good neighbor. They also watch as the stranger performs what seem like miracles. Based on a novel by Joseph F. Girzone. Also with F Murray Abraham, Kurt Fuller, Giancarlo Giannini and Jordan Allen. [1:30]

SEX/NUDITY 1 - A woman leans in to kiss a man, but they do not. A man kisses a woman's forehead and hands tenderly.

VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - A man falls from a ladder, lands hard on the ground and lies motionless (he is pronounced dead). Two young men are caught as they vandalize the rubble of an old church. A man talks to a dead man and rubs his chest and the man doing the talking goes weak. A man places his hand on the forehead of a woman and she convulses. A man holds a woman's head; he seems to go weak and then stumbles to his knees.

LANGUAGE 1 - 4 mild obscenities (sucks, hell, et al.).

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Miracles, faith, losing faith, individuality, community, God, revival meetings, cults, failure, anger, fear, death of a spouse.

MESSAGE - We must keep our hearts open to God in order to be able to love one another. Sometimes you must tear something down in order to build it back up again.

(Note: There are some themes about a vengeful God and that we should fear God.)

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
