Why is “Anaconda” rated PG-13? The MPAA rating has been assigned for “violence/action, strong language, some drug use and suggestive references.” The Kids-In-Mind.com evaluation includes a kiss, some flirting and several hugs, many scenes of creature danger with a giant anaconda chasing and snatching people away with one person shown dead, a woman snatched away by a giant crocodile, people being chased and shot at, a couple of giant snakes dismembered by explosives and a boat propeller, many arguments and yelling, discussions of illegal gold mining, and at least 3 F-words and other strong language. Read our parents’ guide below for details on sexual content, violence & strong language.
Four friends (Jack Black, Paul Rudd, Steve Zahn and Thandiwe Newton) agree to follow their dreams of remaking a favorite horror movie, 1997’s “Anaconda,” and travel to the Amazon Rainforest having no idea what they will encounter. Also with Daniela Melchior, Selton Mello, Ice Cube and Ione Skye. Directed by Tom Gormican. Several lines of dialogue are spoken in an unidentified language with English subtitles. [Running Time: 1:39]
Anaconda SEX/NUDITY 1
– A man and a woman kiss (please see the Violence/Gore category for more details).
► A man and a woman flirt during filming of a movie scene and move close together as if to kiss, but they do not. A teenage boy in a movie tells a teen girl, “Now kiss me woman,” and the camera zooms in on the teen girl’s face, but we do not see the kiss. Many people hug in greeting at a surprise birthday party.
► A woman talks about going through a divorce and says that her ex-husband was having an affair with his dental hygienist.
► A woman wears a low-cut top that reveals cleavage. A man’s shirt hangs open and we see his partial bare chest and abdomen.
Anaconda VIOLENCE/GORE 7
– A giant anaconda drops from a tree and picks a man up off the ground (we see the man being lifted off the ground and off-screen with his legs dangling from the snake’s mouth). A giant anaconda lunges toward a man and someone shoots it; it falls to the ground with blood splatter. A giant anaconda rears up over a man running away and snatches a boar off the man’s back. A giant anaconda lunges toward and chases a car as it speeds through the jungle, explosions ignite along the path and the car is trapped in a dead end as the snake rears up toward them; a man with a gun shoots the snake and it splatters to pieces on the ground, its eye opens and a man stabs it with a small figurine (we see blood). A woman on a motorcycle is chased through the jungle by two men that climb into a boat; one man is pulled overboard by a giant snake, and then pulled underwater and out of sight as the other man tries to help him. While filming a movie scene, a giant anaconda moves toward a man and the man pulls away trying to avoid its fangs before pushing it off the boat and into the boat’s propeller; we see the severed head and blood spreading in the water. A giant snake slithers out of its crate and through a boat while people are sleeping and one man wakes up and screams when it lunges toward him. A man in a small boat hears noises in the water around him and he is grabbed off the boat by a giant snake lunging out of the water.
► A man’s slime-covered and motionless body is discovered in a jungle and people use it as bait to distract a giant Anaconda; they tape a seemingly dead boar on his back and put a squirrel in his mouth before running away and we see the man and the boar revive and he runs in a panic while being chased by a giant anaconda.
► A man and a woman in a van parked in a forest talk about going out into the forest and the man resists, saying that the jungle doesn’t want them there; they hear a noise and when the man pulls a weapon, they see a small monkey outside the window. Two men wade through shallow water in the dark searching for an anaconda; they are separated and one man runs away thinking the other is dead and we see the second man being wrapped by an anaconda and taken underwater. Several people search through a jungle for a missing man and find an abandoned camper van; they hide inside when they hear noises and a man is slammed against the window with bloody wounds on his head and face (he seems dead). A camper van won’t start and when a man tries to fix it, a giant anaconda lunges at him; the van starts and speeds away as the snake tries to get inside and the man jumps through the side door; they are chased through the jungle by people on motorcycles that shoot at them until a woman in the van shoots at the people chasing and disables them. A man holds a gun on several people on a boat, he is struck in the back of the head, shot in the leg and then shot in the torso (we do not see wounds). A woman holds a knife in her hand and tries not to be seen when two men search for her; she steals a set of keys to a boat and leaves, sailing down a river. A man takes a small boat out on a river and finds a larger boat in rubble and scattered in the water; a woman onshore calls to him and she is attacked by a giant crocodile and taken off-screen. A woman holds three people at gunpoint and tells them to get off a boat; they walk through a jungle to a shelter and a man holds a gun on the woman. A woman head-butts another woman and takes her gun away pointing it at the woman that is then attacked by a lunging anaconda and taken away.
► A woman lies on a bed seemingly pregnant and we see a bloody hand push out of her abdomen (for a movie shot) holding a ring box. A funeral is performed for a dead anaconda and its remains are burned on the back of a boat; a man accuses another man of murdering his friend. A crate holding an anaconda is lowered into the hold of a boat and the top is jostled loose.
► Several people practice head butting for a movie scene. Teenagers in a movie run from a large creature and one is slashed on the face by it (we see a bloody scratch). A man spins a toothpick in his mouth in a few scenes and flinches when it gets stuck in his gum. A man faints and falls hard to the floor with a thud.
► A man describes how an anaconda wraps itself around its prey and squeezes the oxygen out of their lungs; he says that one person’s eyes exploded out of their head. A man asks another man if anacondas regurgitate their prey and another man says that it would be better to die. A man talks about an anaconda eating a woman’s entire family. A man says that he has never done anything that matters. A man accuses another man of lying and fires him from a movie. People describe a character in a movie sacrificing himself for another character. People discuss illegal gold mining in the Amazon Rainforest in a few scenes. A man describes a movie scene that sounds like a horror movie with a large creature and makes music with scary strains while making a sales pitch to a man and a woman. Two men talk about movie themes being important and decide on intergenerational trauma being significant. People talk about how much money they will need to make a movie and it turns out to be a lot more than they are able to get in a loan from a bank. A man says that he was fired from his job for being “a little wasted” and knocking over a wedding cake during filming of the events, but says that he doesn’t do that anymore and that he is “Buffalo sober.”
► A man is bitten by a spider (we see the spider when the man holds it in his hand and then throws it) and he says that his leg feels weird; the others with him say that someone needs to urinate on the bite and one man does (we see the stream) after confessing to being unable to urinate when others are around and that he can only urinate while sitting down. We hear insects buzzing in several scenes in the jungle and on a river.
