Samuel L. Jackson is fighting gangs as a teacher in an inner-city school.

SEX/NUDITY 4 - A girl's bare breasts are seen as she lies on a couch. Nude male corpses with towels over their crotches. A gang bang is implied as many guys leave a building where a girl is shown dressing. Sexual innuendo.

VIOLENCE/GORE 8 - A man is shot in the chest with an arrow. A man is attacked and stabbed in the back with a nail stuck in a piece of wood; the man's back is bloody and later we see his very scarred back. A man is shot in the leg and is then shot dead (shot many times). A man kicks and hits his mother. A rat is impaled with scissors and is a bit bloody. A dog is found hanging dead over a wall. We see a bloody stump where a finger was; the cut-off bloody finger is also shown. A partially decomposed corpse is seen. A man pushes a woman, knocks her down and then hits her several times. A man is hit in the face with a gun and his lips are bloodied. People play Russian roulette and two people shoot themselves in the head with blood splattering. Threatening with guns, scuffles.

LANGUAGE 8 - About 70 F-words (including derivatives, the hand gesture and the word written out), many scatological references, many anatomical references, many mild obscenities, a few racial slurs (sometimes African-Americans use them referring to other African-Americans).

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Teaching, inner-city schools, gangs, revenge.

MESSAGE - Teaching can be dangerous. Revenge is sweet.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
