Mary Shelley's Frankenstein | 1994 | R | - 5.7.2
Updating of the classic horor tale with Robert De Niro as the creature, and Kenneth Branagh as the doctor.
SEX/NUDITY 5 - The creature emerges nude from an artificial birthing chamber: There is brief frontal nudity, in deep shadows, and a man is shown shirtless. There are a couple of passionate kisses and a wedding night scene in which the couple loosen each others' clothing and make love. Dr. Frankenstein marries a girl who was adopted by his family and raised as his sister.
VIOLENCE/GORE 7 - A dissected human body is shown, and several scenes of doctors cutting into bodies, just barely off-screen. The list of body parts includes a severed monkey arm which is re-animated and a human brain. There are close-ups of hypodermic needles entering a body, and body parts being stitched together with a needle. The creature steals a corpse from a grave and rips the heart out of the chest of a living person. A young boy is murdered off-screen, and the act is described in sadistic detail. Two characters set themselves afire. A woman dies in childbirth. A man is stabbed to death and his bloody body is shown. There are two hangings. People are shown to be dying from cholera, and the creature evades a mob by riding atop a cart filled with dead bodies. The creature is beaten with clubs. A sailor is tossed overboard into frigid water, and another is crushed by a falling mast.
LANGUAGE 2 - A few mild profanities and insults.
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Technology vs. moral responsibility.
MESSAGE - Passion untempered by moral responsibility leads to destruction.
CAVEATS
Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.
We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.
Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
