Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci help the mob run Las Vegas in the 1970's. Also with Sharon Stone, James Woods, Don Rickles, Alan King, Kevin Pollak, L.Q. Jones, Dick Smothers, Frank Vincent, John I. Bloom, Pasquale Cajano, Melissa Prophet, Bill Allison and Vinny Vella. Directed by Martin Scorsese. [2:58]
SEX/NUDITY 5 - A man is behind a woman thrusting violently while they are both lying on their sides (we only see their faces and shoulders). In two scenes, a man guides a woman's head into his lap for oral sex. We see some cleavage, a woman in a bra and undies in one scene and a nude woman in the background of a scene (her breasts and buttocks are visible).
VIOLENCE/GORE 9 - In a close-up shot, a man's throat is stabbed with a pen numerous times; we see lots of blood spurting. A woman is shot in the head point-blank and as her head is tipped over blood drains out of her mouth. Many people are shot and violently beaten (we see a great deal of blood and bloody bodies) and in one scene we see a gang shoot-out. A badly beaten man has his head put in a vise and squeezed until we see one eye begin to protrude. Two men are beaten with bats until their bodies are bloody and their faces disfigured; a man has his hand beaten with a baseball bat -- in close-up -- and we watch his skin split while he's screaming. A man is buried alive. People are threatened (sometimes with guns) and there are many scenes of screaming and cussing. A car explosion is shown a couple of times.
LANGUAGE 10 - 100+ F-words, many anatomical references (most quite obscene and graphic), many scatological references and many mild obscenities.
DISCUSSION TOPICS - The Mafia, gambling, Las Vegas.
MESSAGE - If you live by the sword, then you're going to die by the sword.
CAVEATS
Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.
We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.
Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
