"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME
200 Cigarettes | 1999 | R | - 5.2.9
On December 31, 1981, several men and women ponder the past year's mistakes and scramble to find that special someone for the brand new year. Co-starring Ben Affleck, Casey Affleck, David Chappelle, Angela Featherstone, Janeane Garofalo, Gaby Hoffmann, Kate Hudson, Courtney Love, Jay Mohr, Martha Plimpton, Christina Ricci and Paul Rudd. [1:34]
SEX/NUDITY 5 - Lots of sexual innuendo and lots of kissing, often passionately. We hear two people having sex, then see part of a man's bare bottom as he rolls off a woman in a slip; the woman then gets out of bed and puts on her panties (we don't see any nudity). A scantily clad woman has a handcuff on her ankle and a shirtless man is next to her in bed (it's implied that they've had, and are again about to have sexual intercourse). A man unzips a woman's dress and pulls it down while they're kissing; we see the woman's bra and see the man feeling her breast. We hear what sounds like two people having intercourse, but we then see a man lying on a woman's back, giving her a head massage. Several times, we see shirtless men and scantily clad women in bed together (it's implied they've had sexual intercourse). Many women wear cleavage-revealing tops.
VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - A scuffle. People shove each other while they're dancing in a crowded bar. A woman slaps another's forehead and a woman knocks a man down. A woman pushes several others away from a cab so she can get in. A woman falls down and gets dog feces on her coat (we see a stain on her coat during the rest of the movie).
LANGUAGE 9 - Nearly 40 F-words, several anatomical references, lots of scatological references and several mild obscenities and insults. One obscene finger gesture.
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Relationships, breaking up, sexual encounters, friendship, falling in love, New Year's Eve celebrations.
MESSAGE - Everyone wants to be wanted, and everyone wants to have a good time.
CAVEATS
Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.
We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.
Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
