The Hard Word | 2003 | R | - 7.7.10

Three brothers plan what they think will be one final heist, for the very day that they are released from jail on bail. But nothing goes according to plan and they end up back in jail, whereupon they are presented with the chance to get out once more -- if they are willing to pull yet one more multi-million dollar job. With Guy Pearce, Rachel Griffiths, Joel Edgerton, Damien Richardson and Kate Atkinson. Directed by Scott Roberts. [1:42]

SEX/NUDITY 7 - A woman holds a man in bed, he lifts her blouse and kisses her breast (it appears that he may be suckling). A woman takes off her panties (we see her bare thighs and stocking tops), goes into a warehouse, she and a man kiss and go into a room where we hear them having sex (moaning and rhythmic sounds). A man and a woman kiss a few times, and a woman puts her foot on a man's crotch. A woman reaches her finger under her skirt and then makes a smiley face on a window with the same finger (her husband is on the other side of the window). A man gives a woman a massage: she lies on her stomach (we see her bare back) then rolls over and the man massages her bare breasts. A man and a woman dance, kiss and caress each other. A man grabs a woman's clothed buttock. Men talk about masturbation. A man flirts with a woman and appears infatuated with her. A woman wears outfits that reveal shoulders, bare thighs, backs and cleavage. Women wear very short shorts that reveal a bit of their bare buttocks. Two men are shown in their underwear and aprons. Men are bare-chested in a few non-sexual scenes (while working out, while playing basketball, etc.). A man talks about his mother living with another woman and the three of them sharing a bed. A man dresses as a woman in a wig and nightgown. A man and a woman sit on a bed together.

VIOLENCE/GORE 7 - Two men shoot each other, and blood and other matter spray over people lying on a floor. A man is shot in the chest, he spurts, gurgles and dies. A man shoots a door open, shoots two men behind the door (blood splatters on security monitors and wall), the man proceeds to other rooms continuing to shoot people as he goes. A man is shot in both feet (we see pools of blood collect, and streaks of blood through a hallway), the man knocks two men down, shoves a lava lamp in the mouth of one (killing him) and shoots the other. A man is hit by a car and slams onto the hood. A man head-butts another man, a man kicks a man in the face (we see the man with a bloody nose). Three men are shot at: they run through streets, across traffic, onto a train platform and jump from an overpass onto a moving train. A man threatens a woman with a gun. Men play basketball and shove roughly and punch each other -- one man is lifted up and thrown on the ground, guards hit several men with sticks, and one man is slammed against a fence. A man confronts another man about having an affair with his wife; they are in a car and when they begin to argue the car swerves and one of the men shoots into the roof of the car. A man slams a woman against a brick wall, and a man gets his fingers stuck in a car window. During a robbery men are rendered unconscious by a gas sprayed in their truck and another man is wrapped in a net. Two men walk toward a pig in a pen and talk about catching it and butchering it (they use detailed descriptions). A man gets very angry and slams a chair into a window repeatedly, a man shoots at statues, and a man and a woman argue and yell at each other. A man hacks at a hanging animal carcass, and a man makes blood sausages (we see his blood covered hands). A man makes plans for three people to get "hurt," implying getting them killed. A man vomits repeatedly (we see goo and hear him gagging) and we see him suffering from food poisoning. A man says he'll "rip someone's head off." A man flatulates.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
