The Governess | 1998 | R | - 9.2.1
Minnie Driver becomes a governess for a Protestant family and falls in love with her employer, while hiding her Jewish heritage. Also with Tom Wilkinson, Florence Hoath, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Harriet Walter, Emma Bird and Adam Levy. [1:43]
SEX/NUDITY 9 - Sexual innuendo (including references to oral sex). Passionate kissing. A man fondles a woman's bare breast, parts her legs (we see a bit of her bare upper thigh where her hose ends), unzips his pants and then lies on top of her (they have intercourse but there's no movement and we only see her gasp). Twice, we see an obviously post-coital scene of a fully clothed man lying next to a nude woman covered by a blanket (we see her cleavage and bare shoulders). A woman undresses a sleeping man and runs her fingers across his face, arms and chest; we then see his full nude front as she takes a picture of him (we see the developed picture later). A man undresses in front of a woman; we briefly see his bare front (including his penis), and we see his bare backside as she caresses his back and buttocks and then embraces him. We see a man's bare back and front (including his penis), as he's wading in water. A woman flashes her bare breast at another. We see a woman's bare breast, legs and backside as she's posing for pictures. We see a few cleavage-revealing dresses. A man fondles a woman's bare ankle, shin and knee; he also touches her clothed breast.
VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - We see a dead man and a sheet-covered body being carried out of a house. A woman spits up. A man pushes a woman against a table, lifts her skirt and stands behind her; it's implied he might rape her but instead he walks away.
LANGUAGE 1 - A mild scatological reference, a mild obscenity and an insult.
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Being Jewish, death, lying, betrayal, sexual affairs, photography.
MESSAGE - You can't -- and shouldn't try to -- hide your true identity.
CAVEATS
Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.
We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.
Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
