George A. Romero's Land of the Dead | 2005 | R | - 6.10.8

Re-animated corpses roam the streets of a deserted town, while humans try to live a quasi-normal life behind electrified fences. Watching both humans and the undead from across a river and high up in a high-rise is a man (Dennis Hopper) who thinks he has everything in control. He doesn't realize that the undead are evolving, and they are somehow communicating and organizing. Also with Simon Baker, Asia Argento, Dennis Hopper, John Leguizamo and Robert Joy. Directed by George A. Romero. [1:40]

SEX/NUDITY 6 - A topless woman (we see her bare breasts, abdomen and legs) dances in a cage at a nightclub. Two women kiss passionately (please see the Violence/Gore category for more details).
A woman wearing a skimpy outfit that reveals cleavage and thighs says, "Hey baby" to a man as he walks by her on a street. Women wear low-cut tops and short skirts that reveal cleavage, bare abdomens, bare shoulders and bare legs in several scenes, and a man is shown bare-chested.
Using crude terms, a man asks another man if he has been having sex with women, and he asks another man a similar question in another scene. A woman says that a man thought that she "would make a better hooker than a soldier."

VIOLENCE/GORE 10 - Many re-animated corpses are shown feeding on people, tearing, pulling and ripping at flesh and tissue: Many re-animated corpses come to a fence and push against it, and many are shot by people on the other side (we see blood and matter spurt, and heads are blown off), but the re-animated corpses push their way through and men are attacked and bitten. Tanks of flammable liquid are shot and explode, and re-animated corpses feed on people -- we see bloody fingers lying on the ground, a re-animated corpse picks them up to eat them, we see blood covered intestines and organs are being pulled out of bodies that are still squirming. Two men discover re-animated corpses feeding on many people -- we hear them crunching and slurping, we see blood on open wounds, and we see internal organs being stretched, and limbs being pulled off. One re-animated corpse has its hand in the mouth and down the throat of a victim, and it pulls out blood and matter, blood gushes. Re-animated corpses break through a glass wall, people inside scream and run, many people are tackled and bitten, we hear crunching, and one re-animated corpse cuts a man in two, down from the head, and we see corpses feeding on intestines and organs; one bites a woman's bellybutton ring off (her belly button fills with blood).
People on motorcycles and in a large armored truck drive through a town where re-animated corpses roam: they shoot many corpses and blood spurts and sprays with each strike, one re-animated corpse holds another by the head as it is being shot and his head pulls off (we see strings of matter and blood attached to his neck), and the head is dropped to the ground and stomped on (we hear a crunch).
A man shoots a re-animated corpse in the head, he is bitten by another one, and he stabs it in the eye. A man shoots a re-animated corpse in the head, another lunges toward him, the man backs up into another who bites him on the neck, another bites him on the arm, and the man screams. A man is bitten on the hand by a re-animated corpse (we see tissue being pulled away and blood on the corpse's mouth), another person shoots the corpse in the head, and then the man who was bitten shoots himself in the head (blood sprays on the wall behind him). A re-animated corpse lunges at a man, they struggle on the floor, the man shoots the corpse under the chin and blood and matter shoot onto the ceiling.
An unburied human corpse lies on the ground, we see maggots wriggling around its face, the corpse begins to move, and a man shoots it in the eye, and blood spurts. A man shoots a re-animated corpse in the eye (we hear a splat), and two re-animated corpses are shot (blood spurts and sprays) and they flop to the ground. Unburied human corpses re-animate and feed on other humans: we see them tugging and tearing at tissue and organs, and we see one pulling his own tongue out.
A re-animated corpse cuts the arm off a man (we see blood and the remaining stump) who is holding a grenade; the arm falls to the ground, the man falls on top of it, and the grenade explodes blowing him in half. A re-animated corpse shoots a man repeatedly, up his body, starting from his feet. Two re-animated corpses pull on a person's hand from the fingers and tear it in two (like a wishbone).
A re-animated corpse attacks a man who flips it around and pushes its head into a bridge mechanism, cutting it off (we see blood spurt and the head falls into the water below). Two men find a severed leg (we see the bloody stump), and then see a re-animated corpse gnawing on a bone covered with blood; they shoot it in the head (we see the bullet hole). In silhouette we see a re-animated corpse pulling the hand off a man (we see dangling tissue and the hand separates from the arm). A re-animated corpse bites a man on the hand, and he screams.
A re-animated corpse grabs onto an electrified fence, it is jolted with electricity, sparks fly, it is shot repeatedly and its head catches on fire; then we see it motionless but still attached to the fence and see that there are several other charred corpses. A re-animated corpse catches fire, it screams and is shot by another re-animated corpse.
A woman shoots a man who had been bitten by a re-animated corpse. A man is shot in the head (we hear and see blood splatter), a man is shot in the stomach, and a man shoots another man in the head.
A woman is thrown into a fenced ring with two re-animated corpses, she struggles to stay away from them, they lunge for her trying to bite her, she climbs the fence, kicks one in the face, and a man outside the ring shoots both re-animated corpses; another man tries to shoot that man, and the bullet ricochets hitting the woman on the arm (we see blood on her arm). A man shoots a gun toward a woman, who panics thinking he is going to shoot her, but the bullet hits a re-animated corpse that's behind her, in the head. A woman shoots a re-animated corpse standing behind a man, and the bullet grazes the man's cheek. A re-animated corpse bites a woman on the face, she is shot in the head by another character, and the corpse is shot repeatedly.
Rockets are fired from a truck into a crowd of re-animated corpses that are feeding on people (we see some of the people still writhing), and the corpses and the people are destroyed (we see some thrown through the air).
Re-animated corpses grab at a man who climbs onto a truck, he kicks one in the head knocking its head off, and the truck backs up crushing several corpses under its wheels. A re-animated corpse jumps on a man inside a truck, and the corpse is shot and thrown out of the truck. Many re-animated corpses claw at a truck (we see fingernails tear off one hand). A re-animated corpse is shot twice but keeps going.
Re-animated corpses in various stages of decay and dismemberment walk through a town: some have blood on their faces, one is missing its lips so the teeth and jaw are exposed, their eyes are whitened, one carries a cleaver, one has a gaping wound that exposes its chest cavity, their skin is grey or blue and ashen, and they growl and snarl at each other). A man has a badly scarred face from a burn (we hear later that he had been trapped in a burning building).
A re-animated corpse shakes a car with a man inside, it jams a gasoline nozzle in through the windshield of the car, pours gasoline into the car, walks away, another re-animated corpse attacks the man when he gets out of the car, they struggle, and the first corpse returns with a flaming can causing the gasoline to explode and to throws the man and the re-animated corpse, in flames, into the air.
Two women kiss passionately, the arms of a re-animated corpse punch through a wall behind them and grab them, and they women scream and struggle. A re-animated corpse steps toward and falls into a river and does not re-surface; many others follow and we see a large number of them coming out of the river on the other side.
Re-animated corpses are chained up and used as attractions at a nightclub: one area is for people to have their picture taken with the re-animated corpses (the re-animated corpses snap at the people and try to bite them), and another is for people to shoot the re-animated corpse with paint balls. A re-animated corpse hacks a hole in a wooden barricade, we see through the hole and there are several other re-animated corpses dangling from ropes and wearing bull's-eyes on their clothes.
An armed guard tries to shoot a man, the man grabs the guard's hand, bangs it against a railing causing him to drop the gun, and then the man shoves the guard against a wall and head-butts him, knocking him unconscious. A man holds a gun under the chin of another man. A man punches a woman in the face, and a man punches a man in the stomach. A man picks another man up by the lapels and threatens him.
A man is left on a dark pier alone, he hears noises, he goes into a dark shack, he hears shuffling and is startled when he sees a rat. A woman shoots locks off a door, just past a man (he jumps, fearing he will be shot as well).
A man threatens to "...do a Jihad" on another man. We hear recordings of people talking about attacks by the re-animated corpses like, "I put a curling iron through her head." People are shown living in squalor and a man picks his nose.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
