Evil Dead | 2013 | R | - 5.10.8

Five young professionals take a trip to an isolated cabin and discover an obscure book called "Necronomicon Ex-Mortis." The teacher among them opens it and accidentally summons up a demon from the nearby woods; one by one, the friends become murderously possessed, until just one is left. With Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas and Elizabeth Blackmore. Directed by Fede Alvarez. [1:31]

SEX/NUDITY 5 - A woman is seized around the wrists, ankles and throat by thorny vines of a tree and held while another thick vine snakes up one thigh and under her skirt to her groin as she screams extremely loudly in an apparent rape by flora as the camera cuts to her face (please see the Violence/Gore category for more details).
A nude woman with visible nipples crawls through debris and mud in a yard; we also see her bare back and chest, shoulders, arms and hands and glimpse the outline of her thighs while she is in shadow. Three women wear short-shorts or skirts that reveal bare legs to the mid-thigh. Two women wear scoop neck tops that reveal cleavage in a few scenes. In four drawings, we see a nude woman with large breasts and nipples and the rest of the body is shown as an indistinct outline.
A demon-possessed woman cuts her own mouth and tongue (please see the Violence/Gore category for more details), and then kisses a human woman on a staircase as the demon reaches under the woman's skirt (sex is implied).
A demon tells a man that his sister is being raped in Hell.

VIOLENCE/GORE 10 - The film centers on a demon that possess humans, causing men and women to maim their own bodies and those of others with mass amounts of gore and blood; when possessed, the humans become pale, walk with jerking movements, have yellow irises and develop slimy hair; the demon appears as a thin young teen woman with yellow irises, black lips and black and red blood stains on her face and clothing. A demon attacks five men and women individually and kills four of them in bloody scenes with a lot of gore, torn flesh and gushing blood.
In a cabin basement with dead, dried-out animals hanging from all the rafters, a bloody teen girl is tied to a stake and burned with gasoline by her father for witchcraft and murder; while in flames, the girl yells in a man's voice, "I'll kill your wife!" and we see large bloody knives on a table with eyeballs and pieces of flesh around them and several onlookers look like burn survivors with scarred faces and one is missing his ears.
A man walks into the bathroom, slips on a severed tongue lying on the floor and hits his head hard on the toilet, and he is then stabbed by a woman using long shards from a broken mirror until another man appears and the woman grabs a nail-gun and shoots the two men several times in the head, body, arms and legs with nails; the woman is shot in the back of the head by one of the men who grabs the nail-gun and the woman grabs a crowbar and swings it off screen at both men as we hear their grunts and groans; one of the men picks up a shotgun and blows off the woman's other arm, which gushes blood to cover the floor and she falls, crawls a few feet, and dies.
A woman cuts her own face in a bathroom with a large knife, bleeding profusely after an image of a gore-covered face blows up the bathroom mirror: the woman's hand begins to grow a tumor up to her elbow, so she goes to the kitchen and cuts off the arm at the bicep in a close-up with an electric knife while a demon-possessed woman peeks through the floorboards and yells not to do it (blood gushes and spatters everywhere after we hear bones cracking and the arm falls to the floor with a thump).
A woman enters a Jeep on a rainy night and the rain becomes blood; she is knocked out of the Jeep by a demon-possessed teen girl that rose out of the bloody mud next to it and we see the demon's spine exposed, with upright scales on it; the Jeep turns over on the woman's hand, she cuts her wrist with a knife and pulls her arm away from the hand, with a lot of gore and blood.
We see a hand-drawn picture of a vine encircling a nude person of indistinct sex (no body details are shown) and similar pictures of a woman pouring scalding liquid over her own head while holding a large knife to her own mouth, setting fire to herself and sinking into mud with a "living" skeleton (please see the Sex/Nudity category for more details); a woman undergoes all of the actions in the drawings and amasses injuries that include shredded facial skin, large blisters on her face, deep cuts to her mouth area that reveal jaw bone, flesh, blood and black gore covering her face and profuse bleeding from multiple cuts; a man puts a plastic bag over her head and buries her alive but later he digs her up and successfully revives her after three attempts with a homemade defibrillator (two large hypo syringes connected by wires to a car battery) and she looks completely well (we hear that she died once before and was revived with a hospital de-fib unit).
A woman drives off a road at night, having seen a thin bloody figure standing in the middle of the road; the driver crashes through trees and into a creek and we see her forehead bloody as she crawls out of the water and mud; she runs, falls, vomits red and black mater on the ground, screams and then runs again until she is seized by vines that rape her (please see the Sex/Nudity category for more details); a man finds her vomiting, hunched at the foot of a tree, takes her to their cabin, where she showers fully clothed and she scalds herself in the shower, showing convulsions and face blisters and vomits again (we see yellow vomit) in a Jeep as the man drives to an ER.
A woman shoots a man in the shoulder with a shotgun and tells him and three friends that they will all die tonight (there's no blood). A man finds that his pet dog has been bludgeoned and we see a bloody hammer beside the dog; the dog dies in his arms. A woman falls down basement steps and is met by another woman that jumps on her, bites her arm (we see blood), and cuts her between the thumb and forefinger with a big knife, producing profuse bleeding; later, the injured woman washes her hand and groans in pain.
A woman forces a spinning saw blade into the mouth of a crawling demon in front of her, cutting it completely in half from head to toe. We see two thin bloody body halves (like a side of beef) sink completely into bloody mud. A demon rises up out of the muddy ground to a standing or crawling position several times and is absorbed back into the mud once.
People enter a basement and have a bloody fight with a demon-possessed woman with a club and a crowbar in a blurred dark scene: the demon throws one man against two different walls with loud crashes; one man dies and the other man lies him down in water that is flooding the basement as the woman slides out of a corner shadow and slams the living man's head under water but he escapes. A woman runs into a small barn room when a demon slices into the narrow room using a machete across the screen several times in close-up, cutting into the woman's thigh and leg, with some blood flow; the woman punches through a wall and runs, gets a chainsaw and switches it on.
Five men and women discover a blood stained basement with dead, dried-out animals hanging from the rafters, by its rotten smell: one man bags and trashes the dead animals while another man finds a trash bag bound with barbed wire and opens it to find a human-flesh covered book that contains hand-drawn images of torture, the outline of a shadow demon, incantations and each page is red with dried blood; he reads a few words aloud and later says he unleashed a demon.
Two men pull nails out of each other's arms and legs, and one pulls glass shards out of the other man's chest and bandages it, while the second man pulls a hypodermic needle (no syringe) out of his face under the eye in a close-up (we can see blood on each nail as it comes out and on the needle). A woman walks through a dim forest with blood dripping from her hand in a close-up. A woman becomes possessed, convulses and urine runs down both of her legs from under her skirt while around her are the sounds of loud "bangs' and "booms" and of unintelligible whispering voices. A woman cuts a raw roast or bacon slab with an electric knife and we see raw meat and fat in close-up.
A man limps into a cabin where another man is demon-possessed, limping and covered in slime; the first man shoots a gun into a gas can and lights up the cabin, which burns to the ground.
A demon-possessed woman vomits gallons of black ooze on a human woman and over the ground as vines grab the human (please see the Sex/Nudity category for more details); a second woman vomits blood on a third woman twice. A tree bursts into flames after being struck by lightning and we later see the sky raining blood for a long period.
During closing credits, blood runs in the background, it runs down a flight of stair, drips onto floors and pours into puddles. We hear that a demon-possessed person may be cured only by one of three ways: live burial, dismemberment, or fire.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
