Why is “Die My Love” rated R? The MPAA rating has been assigned for “sexual content, graphic nudity, language, and some violent content.” The Kids-In-Mind.com evaluation includes several sex scenes featuring full male and female nudity, several seemingly imagined scenes of sex, several scenes with non-sexual nudity, a woman walking into a forest fire (presumably to her death), a woman shooting a dog, a car crashing into a horse and leaving it and the occupants of the car with bloody wounds, discussions of postpartum psychological challenges, a conversation about a man shooting himself, a man holding a knife to his own throat (he does not cut himself), a woman being taken to a psychiatric hospital, many bitter arguments, and at least 31 F-words and other strong language. When a couple (Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson) relocate to an isolated rural family home and have their first child, the wife begins to exhibit behaviors that are not typical and her husband worries for her safety. Die My Love SEX/NUDITY 8
– A man and a woman play fight on the floor pushing each other and wrestling, leading to them having sex and we see them fully nude, they kiss, the man thrusts and the woman then straddles the man (we see bare breasts, a glimpse of the man’s genitals, abdomens, pubic hair, bare buttocks, backs and legs). A woman goes to a man’s house and they kiss; she takes off his shirt and they have sex in a pool house: we see his bare back and her bare legs wrapped around him as he thrusts. A woman straddles a sleeping man and thrusts briefly while putting his hands on her bare breasts and abdomen trying to wake him but he does not wake up. A woman lies on a bed and puts her hand in her pants to masturbate (we see rhythmic movement and her nipples and cleavage are visible in the camisole that she is wearing).
► A woman climbs on a man’s lap in a car and straddles him; she unfastens his pants to have sex and becomes upset calling him useless and leaves the car yelling after spitting in his face. A woman lies on the ground and puts her hand in her pants (we see her bare abdomen and cleavage), presumably to masturbate.
► A woman appears to be imagining her husband having sex with a woman in a restaurant (we see them kissing). A man and a woman kiss tenderly. A woman lies on the ground and a man leans over her and kisses her tenderly. A man and a woman crawl on the ground toward each other, they circle each other and sniff each other’s faces and kiss. ► A woman finds condoms in her husband’s car glove compartment and blows one up like a balloon after the man tries to explain that they are old or that they belong to a friend. A woman confronts a man about when they last had sex and he cannot remember.
► A topless woman wearing only underwear looks in a mirror and we see her bare breasts, abdomen, back and partial buttocks. An infant cries and a woman wakes up to nurse him; we see her later with one bare breast exposed. A fully nude woman walks through the corridors of a psychiatric hospital (we see her bare breasts, abdomen, pubic hair, buttocks and legs). A fully nude woman walks toward a forest fire and we see her bare buttocks, back and legs. A nude man and woman sit on a floor (we see the man’s bare back, partial buttocks and legs and the woman bare legs) as the man paints the woman’s toenails. A woman removes her dress and we see her wearing only underwear and bra and she walks through a crowded party toward the swimming pool and jumps in (we see her cleavage, bare back, buttocks, legs and abdomen) leaving other partygoers alarmed. People are seen wearing swimwear in a beach scene (we see cleavage and bare abdomens and legs on women and bare chests, abdomens, legs and backs on men). A woman squirts breast milk onto a piece of paper where it mixes with dark ink.
Die My Love VIOLENCE/GORE 6
– A woman takes a shotgun from another woman that is asleep on a sofa; the woman returns home, carries a dog to a field and shoots it (we hear the gunshot and see the body with a bloody wound later when a man digs a hole to bury the dog).
► A woman walks into dark woods at night and toward a fire burning in the distance; fire burns all around her. A woman crashes through a glass door and it shatters; she lies on the floor moaning and we see bloody cuts on her face, arms and legs and she recovers in the hospital. A woman slams her head against a mirror and we see blood on her forehead. A woman carries a knife while walking alone at night and points it at a man that she finds in a barn; she tells him to cut himself on the lip and he does so (we see a bit of blood) before riding away on a motorcycle. A man grabs a woman and forcibly puts her into a car and straps her into a seatbelt; they drive away together and we understand that their infant child is still in the house. A woman imagines leaving her infant in a stroller on the side of a road. A woman blows up a condom like a balloon and distracts a man while driving; they crash into a horse that runs across the road and we see it with bloody wound slater after it runs away (the car is crumpled and has blood smeared on the hood and bumper); we see the woman with a bruise on her cheek and the man with a bloody gash on his head. A woman locks herself in a bathroom, scratches the wallpaper with her nails, throws things off shelves onto the floor, squirts soap and shampoo all around, pulls the sink of the wall (we hear water pouring) and sits on the floor as a man knocks saying he needs to use the bathroom but she won’t let him in.
► A man holds his chest and gasps for air after a shocking incident at a party until a woman helps to calm him. A dog digs up the bones of another dog buried in a yard and people at a party are alarmed (we see the dog with a bone in its mouth). A woman finds a man standing alone in the dark holding a kitchen knife to his throat and he drops the knife and walks out of the room. A woman carries a kitchen knife in a few scenes and leaves it on a blanket near an infant in a child seat before leaving him alone (nothing happens) in one scene. A woman goes into another woman’s house and calls her name; the other woman points a shotgun at her as she climbs the stairs not knowing who was in her house. A woman talks about sleep walking since her husband died and we see her walking outside at night carrying a shotgun.
► A woman announces at a party that she shot a dog. A woman describes being taken away from her parents as a child at the beach and that her parents panicked when they realized she was missing. A man and woman argue bitterly in several scenes. A man tells a woman that he is feeling stressed and that she embarrassed him at a party. A woman snaps at a store attendant telling her to stop talking and that they decided not to name their child, when she asks about her infant. A woman jokes about battering her husband with a hammer. People talk about when people need time to adjust with things changing drastically. A woman asks a man to help her with a flat tire and the man’s wife tells her no and that they are late. A woman makes obscene hand gestures toward a dog and a man and points her hand (shaped like a gun) at them. A man yells from a basement (off-screen) and says they have a rat situation. A woman hears noises outside at night and sees a horse nearby whinnying and snorting. A man describes his mother not knowing how to function anymore after her husband died. A woman is dismissive about a man’s interest in the stars and the universe. Women talk about the effects of motherhood in the first several months. A woman proposes a toast, “May we live long and die out.”
► A man and a woman move into a family home in disrepair (we see leaves and a ceiling lamp on the floor) and we hear that a man died there; a man says that he knocked a tooth out on the front porch when he was young. A man brings a dog home and a woman is upset saying they need a cat to take care of the rats. A man appears to be having cognitive difficulties and has trouble putting on his shoes.
