"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME
Star Trek: First Contact | 1996 | PG-13 | - 4.5.3
The Enterprise crew fights the dreaded biomechanical beings called The Borg.
SEX/NUDITY 4 - Data has (implied) feelings of arousal. There is a brief discussion about his sexual capabilities and when he last used them. Nothing explicit. Picard is kissed by a hologram. Data is passionately kissed by the Borg Queen.
VIOLENCE/GORE 5 - In a dream/flashback sequence, a spinning surgical drill touches an eyeball. Also in the dream, something unknown moves around under the skin of a character's face and bursts out. Several battle scenes with explosions, people being knocked around and such; nothing too graphic is shown. At least one man falls to his death. Dead bodies are found in the ruins of a base. The Borg are shot with phasers. Data kills one cyborg by twisting its neck and breaking it. A crewman's neck is penetrated with wires, he becomes a cyborg, and is shot and killed. Drills penetrate Data's head. Humans are dismembered and fitted with mechanical parts. A brawl takes place in a holographic nightclub. Picard sprays a room full of holographic people with machine gun fire. In one somewhat graphic scene Picard reaches inside a Borg's guts. Human skin, taken from fallen crew members, is applied to Data. Data is cut and bleeds. A Borg's hand is sliced off; the dismembered hand is later seen fastened to Worf by a tether. A vapor dissolves the organic parts of the cyborgs. The metal parts of a Borg twitch in death throes until its metal spine is snapped.
LANGUAGE 3 - A scatological reference, a few references to bodily functions, and a few mild obscenities.
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Survival and freedom from oppression. Obsession and revenge.
MESSAGE - Good vs. evil. Disobeying orders is often for the greater good.
CAVEATS
Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.
We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.
Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
