The Scarlet Pimpernel | 1998 | NR | - 4.5.2
Richard E. Grant plays the legendary British hero who saves innocent but convicted aristocrats from the guillotine during the French Revolution. Also with Elizabeth McGovern, Martin Shaw, Anthony Green, Ronan Vibert, Christopher Fairbank, Gerard Murphy, Ron Donachie, Beth Goddard, Milton Johns, Jonathan Coy, Emilia Fox, Jamie Bamber, Dominic Mafham and Pascal Langdale. [1:34]
SEX/NUDITY 4 - A lot of sexual innuendo and a few kisses. Twice, we see a nude but sheet-covered couple in bed; in one of the scenes, they're kissing and embracing passionately (his chest and both of their shoulders, backs and arms are visible). We see a clothed man and woman talking, then briefly rolling around and giggling in bed. While in a brothel, three women undress a man (his bare backside and chest are visible) and it's implied he has intercourse with them. We see many women in cleavage-revealing dresses, a woman's bare back as she's powdering her shoulders and a nude woman and a topless woman in some paintings.
VIOLENCE/GORE 5 - We see a dead woman with some blood splattered on her arm. Gunfire is exchanged in two scenes; we see several people jerk and fall down after they've been shot (no blood is seen). A man is shot in the chest, kicked and then shot in the head (we see some blood on his clothing and hands). An angry mob storms a prison and we see many prisoners stabbed; later, we see many bodies lying on the ground. We see two people hung and a man beheaded by a guillotine (we see him strapped into place and then see and hear the blade fall). A man's back is sliced with a knife, a man's neck is snapped and a man is stabbed in the back (we hear a squishy noise). A couple of instances of threatening with guns, a sword fight, two fistfights and a scuffle. A woman slaps another and a man is punched. Several people are dragged by soldiers in different scenes (one of the men being dragged has a bloody face). A man is bound to a chair and it's implied he's been tortured and interrogated; we later see him looking sickly in bed, with bloody scabs on his face. A man knocks over a table, then throws a chair through a window and jumps out of it.
LANGUAGE 2 - A scatological reference and a couple of mild obscenities and insults.
DISCUSSION TOPICS - The French Revolution, the aristocracy, heroic deeds, betrayal, deception, love.
MESSAGE - True heroes risk everything in their fight for justice.
