A family living in New Mexico in 1974 survive on what they grow on their land, the crafts they make and sell, and their wits. The father (Sam Elliott) is suffering from a deep depression, while the mother (Joan Allen) and 11-year-old daughter (Valentina de Angelis) go about their lives, waiting for him to snap out of it. One day they are informed that they are going to be audited by the IRS and when the agent arrives he has to stay for a while, recovering from bee stings.
