Sexy Beast | 2001 | R | - 6.7.10

A retired gangster living in Spain is coerced into one more "big job." The film charts his odd journey out of retirement and back into the dangerous life of a gangster. With Ray Winstone, Ben Kingsley, Ian McShane, Amanda Redman, Cavan Kendall, Julianne White, Álvaro Monje, James Fox, Robert Atiko, Nieves del Amo Oruet, Enrique Alemán Fabrega, Gérard Barray, José Ma Cano Ramos, Desirée Erasmus, Santiago Frias Munoz. [1:28]

SEX/NUDITY 6 - We see a group of nude people (men and women) sitting around exposing bare breasts and chests and legs. We see a man on his hands and knees, presumably in a shower, shaking and moaning (the implication is that a man is having sex with him although we don't see anyone else). A man describes having had sex with a woman who tried to penetrate him with her finger. A man describes having been accosted by another man. There are discussions of a woman having been involved in pornography, and a story is recounted about a group of people being involved in an orgy. A woman dances suggestively and then kisses a man. A man and woman kiss romantically several times in several scenes. We hear a pornographic movie with moaning. A man sits on a bed nude (we see his profile and no private parts are shown). A man urinates in a toilet (very loudly) and then onto a carpet. A man is shown, in an extended scene, poolside in a Speedo and he places a cold washcloth on his crotch. We see a man in his underwear and a group of men in bathing suits.

VIOLENCE/GORE 7 - A man is shot in the abdomen with a shotgun and we see a huge bloody wound; this scene is revisited several times and we hear the man gurgling and yelling in pain. A man is shot at close range and we see him covered with blood. A man is shot in the head and falls dead to the ground. A man holds a heavy metal box over a man and brings it down, although we don't see it hit the man. A man punches a wounded man repeatedly and two women hit and kick him (we see his very bloody face and hear him yelling). A man hits another man in the head with a bottle which breaks and we see blood running down his head and face. A boy is hit in the face with a rifle butt, and a man is punched in the stomach. A hairy man-beast with horns appears in a few scenes (in dream or daydream sequences); twice he carries and points a gun at a man and once he tears down a wooden wall revealing a man inside. A man barges into a bedroom where a man and woman are asleep in bed and he yells at the man and punches him in the face. A boulder rolls down a hill and crashes into a pool, nearly crushing a man. A man threatens to put a cigarette out in a man's eye and a man is threatened with a gun. There are several yelling matches with lots of name-calling. We see a woman with a large scar on her arm.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
