"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME
Cop and a Half | 1993 | PG | - 1.3.2
Burt Reynolds stars as a cop forced to team up with an eight-year-old (newcomer Norman D. Golden II) who has information about the activities of a drug smuggling mobster (Ray Sharkey).
SEX/NUDITY 1 - Just some cleavage -- though neither Reynolds nor Golden seem to notice it. Reynolds and Golden share a moment in the bathroom where Golden discusses, jokingly, certain bodily functions. Also, Golden learns that the only way to hit a person bigger than he is, is to aim below the belt.
VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - Violence, yes; not much blood, though. Some older kids push around younger kids at school. Standard fist fights and shooting -- just like in any TV detective show, but less violent -- and a number of standard chase scenes. However, one scene may prove scary: a strange noise wakes Reynolds in the middle of the night and he ends up pulling his gun on the kid, scaring both of them.
LANGUAGE 2 - Lots of juvenile name-calling. Indelicate references to one's posterior.
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Murder and drug smuggling.
MESSAGE - Good over evil. The value of having someone to care about and having that person care about you. In an overall sense, the idea that people need people -- more accurately, that kids need someone to look up to, role models.
CAVEATS
Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.
We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.
Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
