Why is “Barbarian” rated R? The MPAA rating has been assigned for “some strong violence and gore, disturbing material, language throughout and nudity.” The Kids-In-Mind.com evaluation includes non-sexual full female nudity, a few murders by beating and eye gouging, a gunshot wound, homelessness and results of an economic decline in Detroit Michigan, discussions of rape and incest, and over 75 F-words and other strong language. A woman’s (Georgina Campbell) nightmares are realized when she arrives at a rental property only to find a man (Bill Skarsgård) that has also rented the same place. After agreeing to share until they can find other accommodations, they realize something sinister, and likely inescapable, is unfolding. Barbarian SEX/NUDITY 7

 – A person in a basement is shown to be a fully nude female form and we see her bare breasts, abdomen, genital area, buttocks, legs and back in several scenes. A man backs through an underground passage and hears noise coming from a room, where he finds a TV playing a video about breastfeeding (we see the woman’s bare breast with an infant nursing and covering the nipple). A woman tries to force a man to drink from her breast and he recoils and tries to get away (we see her bare breast and nipple).
► A woman sits on a toilet in a bathroom (we do not see or hear anything).
► A woman wears a shirt that reveals her bare shoulder. A woman wears a low-cut top that reveals cleavage in a few scenes.

Barbarian VIOLENCE/GORE 8

 – A woman picks a man up by the neck, squeezes his head and presses her thumbs into his eyes, they ooze goo and we see the scene from the back as she pulls his head apart. A man goes to a basement to find a room that a woman describes and he does not come back up; the woman calls for him in a panic and goes to find him, she hears his voice calling for help and follows a dark passage, she finds a dark set of stairs behind another door and follows them down, she walks past large cages with food and water bowls inside and the man charges toward her from the shadows with eyes wide open and whispers for her to be quiet and that someone else is down there; he says, “It bit me,” and something else charges out of the shadows (please see the Sex/Nudity category for more details), screams and slams the man’s head against the wall repeatedly until he is a bloody pulp (we see the blood and hear crunching of bone). A woman attacks a man, pulls his arm off and beats him to death (below the frame) while yelling.
► A woman walks through a dark passageway trying to find a man and she is shot in the abdomen out of the shadows and she screams and falls to the floor (we see a bloody abdominal wound). A man and a woman run away from a woman that follows them up the stairs of a water tower and when she reaches the top, the man grabs the other woman by the hair and throws her over the side; the second woman jumps to break her fall and we see them both motionless on the ground with a puddle of blood growing under the second woman. A woman shoots another woman. A man hears a noise in a dark passageway and waits in the shadows but no one comes out, and he finds a room where a man lies in a bed and coughs violently; the man in the bed does not speak and reaches for a gun that he points at the other man, and then shoots himself in the head (blood splatters).
► A man is dragged through a dark passageway by a person and he screams and claws at the ground, and the person holds the man by the throat and squeezes his face trying to force him to drink from her breast (please see the Sex/Nudity category for more details). A fully nude woman charges out of a house and crashes onto the windshield of a car shattering it as another woman speeds toward a house; the car slams into the house pinning the first woman on the hood of the car and she falls motionless.
► A woman goes to a basement to retrieve toilet paper and the door closes and locks behind her; she finds a rope that when pulled opens another door that leads to a dark passage and a room where there is a badly stained mattress, a bloody handprint on the wall and a camera set up. A man in a dark passageway sees a figure in the shadows and he runs away, trips and falls into a hole in the floor and a cage lid falls over the opening; the man yells and whimpers and a woman also in the hole tells him to be quiet and not be upset or something bad will happen. A woman jumps to get out of a hole in the ground where she is being kept, she runs through passageways and reaches an egress window that she breaks and climbs through, as another woman reaches for her and a man outside helps her out. A man watches a video and we hear the sounds of a woman being beaten and/or sexually assaulted and screaming; the man seems horrified. A man hears a noise in a basement and threatens to shoot whoever is down there; he retrieves a kitchen knife and a flashlight and searches through the basement, he hears a noise behind a door and reacts to the smell when he goes into the room. A man backs through an underground passage and hears noise coming from a room where he finds a TV playing a video about breastfeeding (please see the Sex/Nudity category for more details) and we see blankets covering the floor as he reacts to the smell.
► A woman arrives at a house and a man runs toward her yelling and pounds on the door just as she closes it behind her. A hand with discolored flesh and long dark nails pushes a baby bottle through a cage lid toward a man that’s trapped there; the bottle is shaken around and splashes milk on the man’s face when he refuses to drink from it; a woman that’s also in the cage does drink from it. A woman is startled awake when the door of her room opens with a creek, does not see anything but does hear a man sleeping in another room making noises like he’s having a nightmare; when she touches his arm to wake him, he sits up yelling.
► A man in a car watches and follows a woman in a car leaving a grocery store; he puts on a boiler suit and pretends to be a utility inspector, gains access to the house and unlocks a window (presumably to return later for nefarious reasons). Police arrive at an address where a woman tries to convince them that there is something criminal going on inside; the officers are dismissive and leave when they are called to another crime scene. A man receives a phone call while driving and two people on the other end tell him that he has been accused of being sexually aggressive toward a woman and that he is being fired; he becomes enraged and pulls the car over after they tell him that she is accusing him of raping her.
► A man describes an encounter with a woman and says that they had sex and that she needed some convincing; he says that he is persistent and that she “came around.” A man talks about people living in a house for many years and says that a man had sex with and impregnated many women, mostly his own children, and that a woman living there now is the way she is because of the repeated incest, and that she just wants to have a baby to care for. A man and a woman discuss that they have both rented the same house for the same time and decide to stay until they can find other accommodations. A woman calls the police and reports someone outside the house; the operator tells her that there are no available officers at the moment. A woman is alarmed when another woman tells her where she is staying; she says, “You shouldn’t be there.” A man and a woman discuss relationships and the woman says that her partner is controlling and says, “Guys will walk all over you if you let them.”
► In daylight, we see that a neighborhood is completely in shambles and some of the houses seem to have been burned out. A thunderstorm rumbles and lightning flashes in the sky as a woman arrives at a dark house surrounded by other dilapidated and burned out houses; this scene is accompanied by soulful, ghostly howling. A man becomes upset when he arrives at a house and finds suitcases and belongings inside when no one should be there. A woman is startled by a man that walks up behind her and she jumps. A woman arrives at a house she has arranged to rent and is unable to find a key in the lockbox; she becomes angry and yells, goes back to her car, sees the lights go on inside the house and then sees a man inside.
► A man vomits in a toilet after drinking excessively the night before (we hear gagging; we do not see goo). A woman sits on a toilet in a bathroom (we do not see or hear anything). A videotape is labeled “Puker.”
