The Host | 2007 | R | - 0.8.6

Some time after toxic chemicals are spilled into a river in South Korea an unidentifiable giant creature terrorizes people who live nearby, and it is reported that the creature is also responsible for the spread of SARS. While it is hunted down by officials, one man struggles to save his young daughter who was taken by the creature during its first attack, and may still be alive. With Song Kang-ho, Scott Wilson, Byun Hee-Bong, Park Hae-il and Bae Doona. Directed by Bong Joon-Ho. In Korean with English subtitles. [1:59]

SEX/NUDITY 0 - None.

VIOLENCE/GORE 8 - A large creature is seen in many scenes: it has a large fish-like head with many large teeth and a mouth that opens on four sides, and it has four legs with large and pointed claws and a long tail.
We see, from a distance, the creature eating two people (although we see the bodies disappear into its mouth, we do not hear any sounds or see any actual chewing); then the creature dives back into a river with a young girl wrapped in its tail.
The creature grabs two men, one in its mouth and the other in its tail, and then drops them into a deep cement pit with many other bodies (one man gags, vomits blood and dies, and the other is already dead).
Two men throw large, heavy objects at the creature, it recoils when it is struck, and we see a bit of blood spurt from its tail; the creature then turns around to show its mouth, with a man's legs dangling from it, and we see it attacking another man who's lying on the ground (the man screams).
A person is struck by the creature's tail, thrown into the air and lands in water; the creature chases many people into a separated train car (we hear the people screaming and see them with bloody hands and faces and blood seeps down through the cracks in the floor).
A man shoots a gun at the creature, the creature charges the trailer where the man is hiding, pushes the trailer over, the man fires his gun again, and the creature falls to the ground. A man with a pole attacks the creature, another man throws flaming bottles at it, a man on a bridge pours gasoline over it, and it is struck in the eye by a flaming arrow; it writhes and screeches loudly when it is set on fire and is impaled by a pole through the mouth (it bleeds, collapses and continues to burn).
A man forces the mouth of the creature open, and pulls out a little girl and a little boy (they are covered with slime and appear to be dead). The creature regurgitates many bones and skulls and slime into a cement pit.
A man is jabbed in the neck in order to extract a tissue sample (the man yells and struggles), he is then strapped to a table, his head is secured by a metal ring and doctors drill into his skull (we hear drilling and the man screams).
A man is knocked to the ground by the creature (we hear a loud crack) and we see him lying in a pool of blood. A woman with a bow aims an arrow at the creature, and the creature charges toward her and throws her into a cement pit, where she lies unconscious.
Many protestors are sprayed with clouds of chemicals and they cough; announcements are made that the chemical can be deadly to young children and those with illnesses (we see a few people vomiting blood, one man's ear bleeds and several people lie motionless on the ground and they appear to be dead).
Several people in hazmat suits enter a room filled with grieving relatives of people who have died in creature attacks, they spray them with a chemical and take several of them away; one man is zipped into a plastic bag and dragged out.
A young girl is grabbed by the creature, wrapping its tail around her, and it goes under water with her while her father is trying to get her away. The creature lunges toward a boy and a girl, who hide in a sewer pipe and they scream.
The creature falls into a river from the underside of a bridge, it swims under water, people throw food at it from the banks, and it leaps out of the water and chases people who run away in terror.
A girl runs up the back of a sleeping creature, she grabs a rope made of clothing tied together, and the creature grabs her with its tail and places her gently on the ground. The creature drops two bodies into a pit, and then it licks a girl's face with its long tongue.
A man stands on a bridge contemplating suicide, he sees movement in the water below and he lets himself fall.
A man with a syringe filled with blood threatens to inject a woman and uses her to get away from armed men.
Several people hold a man in order to give him an injection. The creature is sprayed with a chemical and it collapses.
A man strikes another man in the head with a bottle and the bottle breaks (the man is shaken). A man tackles a police officer, who is shooting at the creature.
People on a riverbank gather to look at the creature hanging upside down under a bridge.
A man working in a morgue tells another man to dump out toxic chemicals into a sink, the man protests because the drain leads into a nearby river, but still does as he is told (we see smoke spiraling upward as he pours the chemicals).
On TV news we see a body on a stretcher (we do not see details but are led to believe that only the upper half has been left intact).
Two men fish in a river, one man picks something up in a cup, the two men look at it and talk about how gross it is and that it has multiple tails.
Many people are gathered in a room where they grieve for loved ones who have died; four such people writhe on the floor, crying and yelling. A man trips and falls on the floor. We hear a girl crying for help over a telephone.
A small boy urinates in his pants in a couple of scenes. A man picks his nose. A rat creeps across the entrance of a pipe where a boy and a girl are hiding. A little boy is sick with a fever and complains that "blood keeps coming out."

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
