A modern day interpretation of Thomas Hardy's classic "Tess of the D'urbervilles," it follows the romance between two young people from very different backgrounds: the son of a wealthy property developer (Riz Ahmed) falls in love with the daughter of a rickshaw owner (Freida Pinto) and their love story is marred by the stark realization of their class difference. SEX/NUDITY 8 - A man instructs a young woman to take off her underwear and lift up her skirt: moments later we see the man thrusting on top of the woman while she is face-down on the bed and crying and we hear the man moaning as he thrusts and kisses her; it is obvious he is raping her (please see the Violence/Gore category for more details).
 A man undresses a young woman, they kiss passionately and we see her legs around his waist as he thrusts while they are standing. A man pulls a woman down on top of him, he pushes up the woman's dress, and he thrusts repeatedly (no nudity is visible). A man and a woman are seen engaged in active sex with the man on top of the woman; they kiss passionately and we see a portion of the man's bare chest and back.
 A man instructs a young woman to dance for him (he is shirtless and his bare chest is visible): we see the woman dance as he watches and instructs her to dance suggestively; he grabs the woman and pulls her onto his crotch, he pulls her face toward his and covers her mouth as she tries to struggle and pull away.
 A man kisses a young woman, the young woman pulls away and then they share a passionate kiss; we later see the young woman crying and it is implied she and the man had sex (we see no nudity). We see a man and a woman together in bed (the man's bare chest is visible), the man's arms are wrapped around the woman and they kiss passionately. We see a man on top of a woman in bed and they kiss passionately (sex is implied). A man and a young woman kiss passionately and sex is implied as the man grabs the young woman and runs his hands over her body. We see a man and a young woman kissing passionately as they lie in bed and the young woman rests her head on the man's bare chest. A man reads a book about the Kama Sutra and we see drawings of men and women having sex.
 We see a man wearing a towel around his waist (his bare back is shown). We see a man, face down, in bed by himself and we see his bare back from the waist-up. We see a woman wearing a towel wrapped around her chest (no nudity is visible) after she takes a shower (no nudity is visible in the shower). We see shirtless men performing at a dance and their bare chests are visible.
 A man grabs a woman's waist and kisses her. A man hugs a woman and kisses her on the cheek. Two young women watch a dance video where a man dips a woman and kisses her cheek. Men and women kiss on the cheek in greeting.
 A man asks a young woman if she is going to invite him into her home and the young woman turns him down saying her father is home. A man tells a young woman that he had slept with two other young women before they moved in together. A young woman tells a man that she had been impregnated by him but had gotten an abortion. A group of young men tease another man about his having been involved with multiple women. Several young women are seen dancing and a man remarks to his friend that the women are attractive. We see two young women discuss how several men are attractive. A blind older man touches a young woman's face and tells her that his son had told him that she was beautiful and that he agrees.
 A young woman wraps her arm around the waist of a man to steady herself on the back of a motorcycle.

VIOLENCE/GORE 6 - A young woman holding a large butcher knife straddles a man lying on a bed and stabs him; she pulls the knife out and stabs him three more times, blood sprays on her and the bed as he gasps and dies, she cleans the knife and blood from her dress and she walks away.
 A young woman handles a knife that she had used to murder a man; we see a small amount of blood on the knife blade as she plunges the knife into her own stomach and we hear her gasp (it is implied that she dies).
 On two occasions we see a man raping a young woman; she is seen crying but does not appear to struggle against him.
 A man falls asleep as he drives a truck with his daughter riding in the truck bed: we see the young woman thrown from the truck and land on the ground and a group of people surround her and pull the driver from the truck; the two are taken to the hospital where the young woman's arm is placed in a cast, a bloody cut on her face is seen and she finds her father in a hospital bed (he has a bloody bandage wrapped around his waist and chest).
 We see what is implied to be an abortion being performed on a young woman; she is seen lying on a gurney with her legs propped up as a doctor performs a procedure on her (no nudity is visible).
 Two men grab a young woman, she tells the men that if they touch her she will scream; we see another man drive up on a scooter and the young woman climbs on the back. A boy slaps away his sister's hand. A man jokingly tries to shove a young woman into the ocean, she laughs.
 A man tells a young woman that his father had a stroke and was ill and in the hospital. An elderly woman is seen in bed and she tells a young woman (her granddaughter) that she has been ill for 4-5 months. A young woman tells a man that her father and she had been injured in a car accident and that her father is now unable to work at his former job. An older man tells his son that he used to shoot partridges as a child.
 A young woman throws up in a field and we see the vomit leave her mouth and hit the ground. We hear the sounds of a young woman vomiting behind a closed bathroom door.

LANGUAGE 2 - 2 mild obscenities, 5 religious exclamations.

SUBSTANCE USE - We see men and women smoking hash cigarettes. A man has a beer served to him, men and women drink beer, a man appears very hung over, and men and women drink alcohol at parties. A man smokes a cigarette, and we see a man smoking cigarettes on multiple occasions.

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Classism, modern adaptations of classic novels, abortion, trust, abandonment, disapproval, rape, revenge, returning to your past, shame, suicide.

MESSAGE - Often we cannot escape our circumstances, especially in a rapidly changing culture.

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.
