Stricken with cancer after being dishonorably discharged from special ops, a man (Ryan Reynolds) undergoes an experimental medical cure that’s actually a procedure designed to create mutant soldiers. Miller, Gina Carano and Brianna Hildebrand. Directed by Tim Miller. [1:45]

SEX/NUDITY 8 – A woman in a club speaks suggestively with a man and we later see their faces and shoulders as they thrust up against a wall. Several scenes in an apartment show a man and a woman having sex while nude (we see the woman sitting on the man’s groin in bed, bouncing as he fondles her bare breasts and she gasps) and then he is behind her while as she’s on her hands and knees. A sex scene features a woman under covers shouting and a man appears from under the blankets with large vampire teeth (suggesting oral sex). A sex scene shows a nude man on his hands and knees on a bed while a woman wearing a leather bikini and what seems to be the straps of a strap-on penis has her groin area pressed against the man’s posterior; he is sweating and grimacing as she says to relax and the scene ends. A brief scene shows a man and a woman under a large bear fur with him lying on top of her and the fur is bouncing up and down (we see their faces and hands). A man and a woman wear Christmas sweaters and the man has no trousers and we see his bare buttocks twice while the woman wears skimpy panties and we see her panties as they lie side by side in bed and cuddle.
A strip club is lit with spotlights and moving lights that illuminate a dozen nude strippers with their genitals obscured by the heads of patrons; one topless women writhes at a pole and another topless woman crouches in front of a pole (we see breasts, partial abdomen and one partial buttock; several women farther away stand at poles, most of their bodies obscured by patrons, but we see a few more bare breasts).
A nude man in a medical facility receives a strong hosing off as he crouches in profile in a cell (his genitals are obscured although very brief glimpses may be possible). A close-up shows a man pulling at the jeans of a male criminal, causing the upper buttocks to show in a still shot. A dead man with a red bullet hole in his forehead sits on a toilet with his trousers around his lower legs (he just reveals bare thighs). Two close-up shots show male rear ends covered by tight spandex and tight jeans. A woman wearing a low-cut, tight-fitting jumpsuit reveals cleavage that bounces as she runs; she keeps a container of matches in her bra and removes it to take a match to chew and one scene shows one breast apparently bare with a man’s hand blocking it. Cocktail waitresses in a club wear skimpy bikinis that bare cleavage, abdomens and bare legs with one woman wearing a short dress with thin straps and low, square neckline that reveals cleavage (a close-up camera pan travels up the back of her bare legs to the thighs and buttock bottoms and a tattoo is seen over one breast and another around her bicep). A man removes his sweater to reveal his chest and abdomen and then collapses (please see the Violence/Gore category for more details).
A man and a woman embrace and kiss for several seconds.
A man urinates and we hear urine hitting porcelain (nothing is seen). A man leans his head on a woman’s shoulder on a couch and makes sucking noises as if nursing and she moves away, looking disgusted.
A cartoon character experiences a large erection in his superhero tights as he rides on the back of a unicorn, rubs its horn and the horn shoots rainbows (simulating orgasm) and the animal flatulates paper money out its rear end.
After unorthodox medical treatment, a man says his face looks like a testicle with teeth. A woman tells a man that he likes Skee-Ball games better than vagina and he says to put the balls in the holes.

VIOLENCE/GORE 8 – A man is strapped to a gurney and wheeled into a dirty cement warehouse that houses medical experiments, including one to cure the man’s cancer; he is transferred to an MRI table and strapped in, given a cylinder of material to bite, given an injection (please see the Substance Use category for more details), and slid into an oxygen chamber where the pressure is reduced, making him gasp, sweat and convulse before being left for over two days until a doctor pulls him out and taunts him; the captive head-butts a woman and takes a match from her that he lights causing an explosion as a man stabs him through the back and shoulder with a long rebar length and sticks him to the floor as the screen fills with flames; we see a man with a bloody face strapped to a gurney (we do not see him again) and we later see a man dig out of thick ashes (we see that his skin is yellow, pock marked, ridged and blotchy).
In a medical facility a man is tortured by being waterboarded, chained to a metal fence, hooded and electrocuted briefly, and then sprayed with a high-power hose stream of water. A man abducts a woman from an alley, places her in an oxygen chamber and turns off the air; as she chokes, another man breaks her out of the chamber.
A pile up of cars blocks a highway bridge where three cars lie crunched and steaming and several men shoot automatic weapons at a superhero who has two swords and a handgun; one man falls over a bridge and apparently dies while the swordsman shoots and slashes all the other men and we see blood flow; another man slams him into the side of an overturned car, but he is not injured and he stabs the last man with both swords and holds him in the air in that position with blood dripping. A man slams another man against a bridge railing and they fight with martial arts strikes, kicks, throws and chokeholds until the first man leaves after shooting and killing 12 men (some blood drips from a few of them) and he is seen with a bloody bullet wound in one arm (we watch it drip blood and instantly heal).
Three fight scenes include two men fighting with swords and knives in each hand and using martial arts: one man is stabbed through the chest with a sword (he does not die), one of the men uses a long metal club and his own face and teeth become very bloody from punches (he cannot feel pain), one man holds a handgun on another man and a metal giant man tries to talk him out of pulling the trigger but the gunman shoots and kills the man, below the frame.
A giant metal man fights with a few men and a woman and all of his opponents in different scenes hit him in the groin and injure their hands; one man hits the giant in the face and then in the groin, breaking both wrists, then kicks the metal man’s groin, breaking his own leg; the metal man handcuffs a man and drags him away by one arm until the second man cuts off his hand, blood dripping and an obscene hand gesture is showing on the hand left in the cuff (the injured man wraps a towel around his stump as fingers begin to grow back). A man’s leg is pinned to a wall by a sword and he cuts the leg off (he heals instantly). A superhero pulls a knife out of his groin and he is uninjured. A woman tries to stab a giant metal man in the groin, but the knife bounces off. A man has a mask stapled to his face and a woman removes the two staples (no blood is seen).
A boxing match shows two women punching each other in the face and when a man shoots a handgun into the air, and another man thrusts a sword through the gun hand, pinning it to a wall; the swordsman pulls a handgun and shoots, killing five men, with some blood seen.
A metal giant and a teenage girl fight a woman: we see many punches, kicks, throws and choke holds as opponents are thrown through the air and slide across a concrete floor (we see a few scrapes and bruises); the giant slams the woman onto a wall and she chokes him with a metal cable as the teen girl creates fire and throws it at the woman to no effect but then makes more fire and collapses the warehouse (we see a lot of concrete break and fall and a wide concrete platform and building fall into rubble as box cars slide off to a lower level but do not hit anyone).
A still shot montage, an action sequence and two flashbacks depict a superhero jumping from a highway bridge into an SUV through the roof and pounding four occupants; one man shoots the driver in the groin accidentally with some blood showing as the hero burns a man’s forehead with the car cigarette lighter and a fist punches through a passenger side window and glass shatters outwards; two men are shot and apparently die (no blood is shown), and the SUV flips over its long axis several times, crunches and lies flattened and dented.
A man slams the head of another man into the passenger side window of a vehicle, shattering glass and causing short cuts on the face; the injured man screams as the scene ends and we do not see him again. A man fights criminals alone at night, pounding thieves and men and assaulting others with his fists; he warns a young man who is a stalker to stay away from a young woman, then slams the young man on a wall, chokes him and kisses him in the cheek, scaring him. An older man attacks other men in a bar, breaking tables and punching several men out until a woman chokes him and makes him stop as his eyes bulge and he gasps. A man and a woman enter a bar and the woman chokes the bartender but releases him as patrons pull handguns and the scene ends. A man wearing a hoodie approaches his fiancé, who thinks he is dead; she slaps his face twice and gasps at his appearance. An upturned shipping platform collapses and a sheet of metal falls on two men, likely killing them.
A man tells another man to kill his rival and kidnap a woman as we hear a scream coming from the trunk of a car and the driver admits that his rival is in the trunk; another car hits the back of the first car and we see the crushed trunk steaming with smoke and hear a man screaming as the scene ends. A man diagnosed with cancer visits a doctor who tells him to refrain from doing anything rash and another man recruits him for experiments. We hear that a man was a Special Forces soldier with 41 confirmed kills. A man tells another man to fight for the woman he loves.

A man and a woman help another man fill a large duffle bag with automatic weapons and ammunition. Motorcycles run into SUVs and break apart, throwing the riders to the pavement.

A man crawls across the floor of an old warehouse that is burning, but escapes. A woman bends over a man’s back and sews up a gash about eight inches long; we see some raw tissue briefly and black stitches (he is unable to feel pain). A man uses his newly growing hand to touch the cheek of an elderly woman, who is startled.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
