There's Something About Mary | 1998 | R | - 5.3.8
Ben Stiller hires sleazy P.I. Matt Dillon to find his high school sweetheart Mary, played by Cameron Diaz.
SEX/NUDITY 5 - A man gets his private parts stuck in his pants' zipper. A nearly nude woman is seen in a poster, a woman wears cleavage revealing outfits and a woman is shown in her bra (from a distance). The sagging breasts of an older woman are seen twice (briefly, and they look quite fake) and the side of a woman's breast is seen once. It is implied (not seen) that a man is performing oral sex on a woman and a woman is performing oral sex on a man; and in one scene a man is misconstrued as being involved in oral sex with another man (his face is by a man's crotch). A man is seen in his underwear. A man masturbates (audibly) as we see his arm stroking. A woman mistakenly smears semen in her hair. A man caresses a woman's clothed breasts. Sexual innuendo (including references to masturbation, homosexuality, pregnancy, bisexuality and prison sex).
VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - A man is punched in the face and a man is shot. A man's head is beaten on a table and a man is punched in the throat. A man has a black eye after being hit by a baseball. A man's lip is snared by a fish hook. A man is thrown against a car, a man is shoved onto the floor, a man is picked up and thrown to the floor and a man falls from a stretcher. A man and dog have a fight complete with biting, wrestling and jumping; the dog flies through a window. A dog is drugged and presumably dies; he is brought back to life with a shock but his stomach catches fire in the process. A man is hit in the face with some bird poop.
LANGUAGE 8 - About 40 F-words, about 30 scatological terms, 20 anatomical terms, and many mild obscenities.
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Relationships, honesty, stalking, mental retardation, tolerance of people who are different, cruelty to animals.
MESSAGE - It's never too late to find your sweetheart.
CAVEATS
Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.
We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.
Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
Gladiator II - 2.7.2
Wicked: Part I - 3.4.2
