Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs | 1937 | G | - 1.3.1
The classic fairy tale, as told by Disney, re-released in 1993.
SEX/NUDITY 1 - No nudity, of course. Snow does distribute some very tender kisses on the dwarfs' heads, and there is The Big Kiss from the Prince which restores Snow's life.
VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - The face which appears in the magic mirror is sort of scary, and so is the wicked Queen -- especially when she turns into an old hag, and when she directs the huntsman to kill Snow and "bring her heart back in a box." When Snow runs into the woods, all sorts of things come to life and threaten her: tree branches turn into bony hands and logs into crocodiles. Later, Snow is almost killed when the dwarfs think she's a monster. Then there is some Three Stooges-type slapstick between the dwarfs, but nobody gets hurt. When the dwarfs chase the witch off a cliff, we never actually see her fall; yet two vultures swoop down after her, as and indication that she's dead. The fact that Snow is placed in a glass coffin, may strike some as a little ghoulish.
LANGUAGE 1 - Just some very tame name-calling.
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Jealousy, child abuse, black magic. Grumpy's attitude toward women is sexist by contemporary standards.
MESSAGE - Love conquers all. Beware of strangers.
CAVEATS
Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.
We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.
Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
